Chapter 42
How Could You Possibly Be Married
Ethan Sterling quickly calmed down. An arrogant, conceited look appeared on his face, and he said loftily, "Claire Bennett, don't think this will make me regret it. What you're doing is useless."
Claire Bennett found it a little ridiculous.
Keeping her patience, she asked, "Heh, I'm pretty curious—what exactly did I do?"
"Weren't you deliberately pretending to be married so I'd panic and regret it?" Ethan Sterling looked like he had already seen through Claire Bennett, his expression full of contempt and disdain, with a trace of smugness.
Seeing this bastard act like the whole world couldn't live without him, Claire Bennett fought the urge to slap him.
She held it in!
Her hand was still injured. Hitting him would only make it worse, and that wasn't worth it.
Ethan Sterling let out a cold snort. "I'm warning you, stop playing games. Even if you regret it now and want to throw yourself at me, I'd still have to think it over carefully!"
Claire Bennett couldn't listen anymore. Where did Ethan Sterling get the nerve to say something like that?
She frowned and said, "Stop!"
"I've known you that long, and I never knew you had a narcissism problem. Did you install GPS on yourself? Do you know your own location?" Claire Bennett said impatiently, full of disgust, "I'll say it one more time: I have absolutely no interest in you. Get as far away from me as possible!"
However much Ethan Sterling had once moved her, that was how disgusted she felt now.
Fortunately, she hadn't poured her whole self into him. It was her luck that she got to see his hidden side before marrying Ethan Sterling.
The last shred of feeling she had for Ethan Sterling had already been completely destroyed.
If possible, she hoped they would never have anything to do with each other again. Since he liked Naomi Pierce, then he could stay with Naomi Pierce forever.
"Deny it all you want. We were together for so long—how could I not understand you?" Ethan Sterling sneered, as if he knew Claire Bennett inside and out.
"Psycho. I can't be bothered talking to you."
Claire Bennett rolled her eyes and strode away.
What rotten luck. How had she ever thought Ethan Sterling was a good man before?
"President Sterling."
Claire Bennett heard a man's voice, and her body stiffened for a moment.
President Sterling?
Could it be that Julian Sterling?
She looked toward where the voice had come from.
The elevator doors at Sterling International opened, and several men in sharp suits walked out.
Julian Sterling had spotted Claire Bennett at first glance just now. It was already too late for him to avoid her.
Claire Bennett was standing there, staring at them with wide eyes.
His gaze turned sharp as he coldly swept it over the assistant who had just spoken. The assistant still had no idea what he'd done wrong. Looking completely innocent, he didn't dare say another word.
At that moment, another assistant caught on and immediately pulled the others away.
Claire Bennett even craned her neck, looking at the people leaving behind him.
It wasn't until a tall, straight figure blocked her view that Claire Bennett withdrew her gaze and looked up at Julian Sterling standing before her.
His brows were tightly furrowed, and his expression looked a little grim.
It seemed there was no way to keep his identity hidden now, but it didn't matter. He could set some ground rules with Claire Bennett again, and they could still continue this relationship.
Julian Sterling took a deep breath. "Claire Bennett..."
Claire Bennett said in puzzlement, "Julian Sterling, Ruby is so pretty, but that President Sterling looks kind of ugly. He wasn't some kind of genetic mutation, was he?"
"..."
Only after saying it did Claire Bennett realize it was wrong to badmouth someone on their own turf. She gave a light cough and said with an awkward smile, "I was just saying it casually. Don't tell him, okay?"
Julian Sterling didn't answer.
Claire Bennett continued, "Oh right, why are you here? Did you bring that President Sterling to the company today?"
As soon as she finished speaking, Julian Sterling's expression finally changed, and his brows knitted tightly together.
He finally realized what was off—Claire Bennett hadn't recognized him!
She thought President Sterling was the assistant just now?
Julian Sterling asked casually, "You saw President Sterling just now?"
Claire Bennett shook her head a little blankly and said, "No, I didn't get a good look. I was just about to look carefully when you blocked me."
Actually, Julian Sterling's presence was too strong. Her attention had landed on him at first glance, and she only noticed the others afterward. As for the real Julian Sterling, by the time she wanted to get a clear look, it was already too late.
Julian Sterling's tense heart relaxed, and a faint curve lifted at the corners of his lips. "Next time I'll let you get a good look."
At that moment, Marcus Reed had just settled Kevin Parker and returned to Sterling International.
As soon as he came in, he saw Julian Sterling's back. Claire Bennett happened to be completely blocked by him, so Marcus Reed called out in greeting, "Pres—... ahem, ahem, ahem..."
The moment Julian Sterling shifted and Marcus Reed saw Claire Bennett, he was nearly scared to death. He forcibly swallowed the rest of the word "President," choking until his face turned red.
Claire Bennett widened her eyes in surprise. "You!"
She looked at Marcus Reed and asked in confusion, "Aren't you that food delivery guy?"
