Chapter 441
Reduced to Going on a Blind Date One Day
When she woke up the next day, Claire Bennett finished breakfast with Julian Sterling, and then they went to work at Sterling International.
The Sterling family watched the two of them being lovey-dovey again, as if Claire Bennett's gloomy mood last night had just been their imagination.
"Ruby, what did you talk about with your sister-in-law last night? What exactly was she angry about?"
When Ruby Sterling heard her parents asking curiously, she immediately launched into an animated account of her conversation with Claire Bennett, brought up Hazel Lewis too, and finally wrapped it all up with a conclusion.
"Dad, Mom, I think Hazel Lewis is only that arrogant because Grandpa's backing her. She even tried to compete with Claire. Does Claire need to compete with her? My brother doesn't even like her."
As Ruby Sterling spoke, she snorted and said, "Other than family background, Claire completely crushes Hazel Lewis. Grandpa is such a senile old fool! Treating trash like treasure—Claire is the granddaughter-in-law he should value!"
Mrs. Sterling frowned and said, "The old man has always been stubborn. Your father and I prefer freedom. Back then, we moved away from New York because we wanted to escape his need to control everything. Now that he's satisfied with Hazel Lewis, of course he doesn't want Julian to choose Claire as his granddaughter-in-law."
"Then what do we do?" Ruby Sterling propped up her chin, let out a heavy sigh, and said, "We can't just keep letting Hazel Lewis stay at Sterling International, can we? What if she affects my brother's relationship with Claire in the future? If Claire runs off then, where are you going to find another daughter-in-law?"
Mr. Sterling wasn't that pessimistic. He said, "I trust Julian's ability. There's no way he'd let something like that happen. We shouldn't interfere. We might only end up dragging him down."
After saying that, Mr. Sterling seemed to remember something and shot Mrs. Sterling a look.
Mrs. Sterling understood and chimed in, "Exactly, we shouldn't worry. Speaking of which..."
After she said that, she looked at Ruby Sterling and said, "You, on the other hand! How long have you been single? You're not getting any younger... If you don't get married soon, there won't be anyone left to choose from later. A friend's son of mine is pretty handsome, and his character is first-rate too. You're about the right age now. It's time you found a boyfriend. This afternoon, you can go meet him."
"That's right. Your mother has already made plans with them. Go meet him and get to know him."
"What!" Ruby Sterling nearly jumped up.
She hadn't expected that talking about Julian Sterling would somehow turn into talking about herself, and judging from the way this sounded, were they trying to send her on a blind date? This afternoon, no less!
Good grief, that turn came way too fast. Her poor little heart couldn't take the blow.
Mrs. Sterling said, "You don't need to be so shocked. People nowadays are all pressed for time. It's all about being fast and saving time and effort. If we leave you to find a boyfriend on your own, what, so you can end up with a man like Chase Monroe again?"
The moment her own business was brought up, Ruby Sterling instantly went quiet.
She was a victim too.
Who knew she'd run into a scumbag like Chase Monroe who worshiped money and looked down on the poor? Was that what she wanted?
"Mom, who is this friend of yours? Do I know him?" Ruby Sterling silently accepted Mrs. Sterling's arrangement, but she was still a little uneasy and wanted to find out who she was being set up with on this blind date.
She knew practically all of Chicago's wealthy families. Even if she hadn't met them, she'd at least have some impression of them.
If she knew who it was in advance, she could at least prepare herself mentally.
Mrs. Sterling snorted. "We'll be lucky if you can get yourself married off at this point, and you still think you get to choose? Cut the nonsense and go on the blind date already!"
Ruby Sterling wanted to cry but had no tears.
She was still a daughter of the Sterling family, after all. How was she that bad?
In the end, she could only go get ready pitifully, planning to meet that blind-date guy in the afternoon.
She hadn't expected that she too would one day be reduced to this.
