Ch. 444 - An Unexpected Phone Call

Chapter 444

An Unexpected Phone Call

Ruby Sterling had a new identity, and Claire Bennett's life had returned to normal as well. That day, while she was handling work, she received a phone call.

When she saw the caller ID note on the screen, she blanked out for a moment.

The person calling her was someone from the Bennett family side. You could say she was Claire's aunt, but Claire Bennett had stayed away from the Bennett family for so long that she had almost become detached from the people and things from her past.

Suppressing the thoughts in her heart, Claire Bennett swiped to answer. "Hello, Auntie."

"Claire Bennett, I heard you're working at Sterling International in Chicago now? I'm downstairs at your building right now, so come down immediately."

Hearing Laura Bennett's downright rude tone, Claire Bennett's expression stiffened slightly.

She was a little curious about what exactly Laura Bennett wanted with her. Logically speaking, Laura Bennett and she were not especially close.

The Bennett family's situation was a little complicated now.

Claire Bennett's grandmother had passed away fairly early, and later Old Mr. Bennett started another family with someone else. Her step-grandmother also had a son and grandson, which made Bennett Group's family structure rather complicated, and the whole big family was constantly competing with one another in private.

Old Mr. Bennett had four children in total, and the Bennett family was controlled by Old Mr. Bennett. The four of them were constantly openly and secretly fighting over the Bennett family's assets.

Later, Victor Bennett married Megan Shaw Bennett and independently founded Bennett Group, the jewelry company. With help from the Shaw family, he did better and better, and only then did Old Mr. Bennett begin to favor him.

Later, Victor Bennett became more and more successful, and his status within the Bennett family gradually changed as well. The others also flattered and fawned over Victor Bennett, but Claire Bennett knew that without the Shaw family's help back then, Victor Bennett could never have stood out among those people in the Bennett family.

Unfortunately, in the end, her mother had still given her heart to the wrong man.

"Auntie, what did you come to Chicago to see me about?" Claire Bennett asked, snapping back to herself.

"I can't explain it clearly over the phone. Let's talk when we meet."

After saying that, Laura Bennett hung up with a sharp click.

Claire Bennett sighed helplessly.

In the end, she still gathered up her things and went downstairs to see Laura Bennett.

In the café downstairs in the Sterling International building, Claire Bennett saw Laura Bennett. Laura Bennett worked as a manager at Bennett Group and was a fairly strong-willed woman. Today she was wearing a beige business suit, her hair pinned up high, with light makeup on her face. She looked extremely capable and polished overall.

Laura Bennett hadn't changed much from how she used to look. It seemed that outside of work, she hadn't forgotten to take care of herself either.

After Claire Bennett appeared, Laura Bennett's gaze fell on her. She looked Claire Bennett up and down, then finally pointed to the seat in front of her and said, "Claire, since you're here, sit down."

Claire Bennett sat down across from Laura Bennett. She ordered a cup of coffee, then looked at Laura Bennett and asked, "Auntie, what did you come to Chicago to see me about today?"

A mocking look appeared on Laura Bennett's face, and she said coldly, "You still dare ask me what I want with you? Have you forgotten what day it is in a few days?"

Hearing Laura Bennett's words only made Claire Bennett more curious. She really didn't remember what day it was.

Perhaps because she had left the Bennett family, Claire Bennett no longer cared about the Bennett family's affairs, much less remembered what day it was.

Her first instinct told Claire Bennett that Laura Bennett had definitely come to see her because something had happened in the Bennett family.

Her aunt had always been the type who never got up early unless there was something in it for her. Only when her own interests were involved would she be this attentive.
