Chapter 558
Is It True He Was Kicked Out by the Sterling Family
Claire Bennett left together with Molly Lee.
Molly Lee looked utterly listless, her mood extremely low.
She had originally been so happy that someone had finally taken an interest in Maison Verne and would definitely invest in them, but she hadn't expected Ava Bennett to ruin it in the blink of an eye.
Ava Bennett was just too awful!
Claire Bennett glanced at Molly Lee. Seeing how dejected the young woman looked, she let out a soft laugh and comforted her, "Molly, don't be upset. If this doesn't work out here, we'll just find another good investor."
"Manager Song! No one has contacted us at all during this whole period. Hudson Capital was the first one to reach out to us. I suspect Ava Bennett pulled some strings behind the scenes," Molly Lee said indignantly.
Claire Bennett sighed softly. It wasn't as if she didn't know that too.
All she could do now was stay strong and find a way to get the launch event up and running. Only then could she crush Ava Bennett's arrogant momentum.
All their time today had been wasted here. With the trip to Hudson Capital and the waiting time, it was already close to quitting time, so Claire Bennett simply let Molly Lee get off work early.
After exchanging a few more words of comfort, the two parted ways and went home.
Although Claire Bennett had comforted Molly Lee, her own mood wasn't very good either, and she returned to her apartment disappointed.
Just as she stepped into the elevator, a large hand stopped the elevator door, and Julian Sterling's tall figure appeared before her. He was wearing a bespoke suit and looked like he had just returned from the office.
The moment she saw Julian Sterling, Claire Bennett suddenly thought of what Ruby Sterling had said.
She said Julian Sterling really had been kicked out of the house, and was even going to be stripped of his position...
Worry surfaced in Claire Bennett's eyes, but she also felt that her relationship with Julian Sterling was a little awkward now, so it wasn't appropriate for her to press him about that kind of thing.
Julian Sterling glanced at Claire Bennett and said nothing, merely standing quietly beside her.
The elevator doors slowly closed.
With only the two of them in the elevator, the atmosphere felt somewhat strange. Claire Bennett easily caught that familiar crisp scent on Julian Sterling, and it stirred up all her past memories.
Suppressing the flutter in her heart, she quietly shifted two steps to the side.
Julian Sterling lowered his eyes to look at Claire Bennett. Seeing how she was avoiding suspicion, he frowned slightly and took a small step closer to her.
Claire Bennett felt that the distance between her and Julian Sterling hadn't widened, so she moved another two small steps away.
However, Julian Sterling followed right after her and moved closer again.
She shifted away again!
In the end, Claire Bennett was pressed right up against the elevator wall with nowhere left to retreat. A helpless look appeared on her face. "Julian Sterling, this elevator isn't even that small. Why do you have to keep moving toward me?"
Julian Sterling lowered his eyes to look at her. "Avoiding me?"
"No..." Claire Bennett answered guiltily. She hadn't expected her behavior to be noticed, so she could only stand there without moving.
Julian Sterling immediately asked, "You're looking for investors?"
Claire Bennett looked at Julian Sterling in surprise. How did he know she was looking for investment? Could it be that he had been paying attention to her all along?
Before Claire Bennett could finish wondering, the elevator reached their floor, and Julian Sterling was the first to step out.
Claire Bennett came back to herself and followed behind Julian Sterling.
The two of them lived directly across from each other. Claire Bennett found it somewhat ironic. Legally speaking, they were still husband and wife, but they had long since separated.
Julian Sterling stood at his door without going in. Claire Bennett looked at him, and in the end she still couldn't hold back from asking, "Ruby said you were kicked out by the Sterling family. Is that true?"
When Julian Sterling heard Claire Bennett's words, his gaze darkened slightly.
He was such a smart man that he quickly understood what was going on.
Ruby Sterling had always been on his side, so she had probably said quite a few good things about him in front of Claire Bennett, or perhaps shaped some kind of image of him.
He stayed silent and said nothing, but in Claire Bennett's eyes, that silence was an admission.
Her heart grew heavy. She hadn't expected Julian Sterling to still end up heading in the direction she had never wanted to accept. Back then, when she had taken the initiative to separate from him, it had been because she hoped he could return to the Sterling family and have a broader world ahead of him.
Claire Bennett was silent for a long while.
At last, after struggling over it for quite some time, she asked, "Then how are things for you now?"
"Probably not very good."
Julian Sterling felt that sometimes a well-meaning lie wasn't such a bad thing. If Claire Bennett thought he had been kicked out by the Sterling family and pitied him for it, he didn't mind showing weakness in front of her.
Claire Bennett let out a heavy sigh and said, "Actually, it's all my fault. You could explain things clearly to your grandfather. Maybe once he calms down, he'll let you go back. And don't keep butting heads with him. Being out here is nothing compared to being with the Sterling family."
Julian Sterling fixed his gaze on Claire Bennett and said firmly, "It's not your fault. It's my problem. I wasn't able to make you happy."
Hearing Julian Sterling's words, Claire Bennett nearly burst into tears.
Julian Sterling had left the Sterling family because of her, yet now he was saying he didn't blame her. Suddenly she thought of what he had said that morning—that as long as he could see her, that would be enough.
Claire Bennett had always been someone whose heart softened easily. She still had feelings for Julian Sterling, and now that she knew about his situation, she naturally felt terrible.
Julian Sterling saw the guilt rise in Claire Bennett's eyes, and his own gaze flickered.
He chuckled softly. "Alright, go on back first."
After saying that, Julian Sterling opened the door and went into the apartment.
It was only after the door to the room had closed that Claire Bennett came back to herself. Looking at the tightly shut door, her feelings were all mixed up.
She opened the door to her own apartment and went back inside.
After saying those things to Julian Sterling just now, she remained distracted the whole time, her thoughts constantly drifting back to him.
