Chapter 99

Here to Apologize to President Sterling

"Get up, hurry, and come with me to President Sterling's office."

"For what? Hey... let go! Let me wipe my ass first!"

Last time, when Claire Bennett saw them together with Julian Sterling, she had mistaken Wes Mercer for President Sterling, and Marcus Reed had laughed about it for a long time after he heard.

Who would've thought Wes would come in handy so quickly.

Claire hesitated before asking, "Julian Sterling, are you..." President Sterling?

Before she could finish, the office door opened.

She turned her head and saw Wes and Marcus walk in together. Summoning his courage, Wes shouted, "What are you doing sitting in my seat? Got a death wish? Trying to usurp me?"

Julian Sterling had almost admitted who he was just now, but when he thought about how furious Claire would be and how she might throw herself back into her white moonlight's arms again, he held back.

He hadn't expected Wes to save the situation in time. He quickly slipped into character, stood up, and moved respectfully to the side.

"President Sterling, sorry."

Wes walked over and plopped himself down in the seat Julian had just been sitting in.

Claire stared at Wes in disbelief. His figure overlapped with that vague silhouette in her mind.

That was what she'd thought—how could Julian Sterling possibly be so bored that he'd disguise himself as someone else and pretend to be himself just to tease her? The more she thought about it, the less likely that seemed.

Right, this was President Sterling.

Last time, she'd even said he was ugly, but his presence really was so much worse than Julian Sterling's.

Julian walked over to Claire's side. "What are you doing here? How did you get up here?"

He remembered that the front desk staff at Sterling International were pretty professional. They wouldn't make that kind of rookie mistake, and they definitely wouldn't let an unannounced stranger come upstairs.

"I came up from the underground parking garage."

"You knew the elevator code?"

Julian couldn't help wondering if he'd made it too simple, if that was why it had been cracked so easily.

"I tried your birthday. You set that elevator code, didn't you?"

"..."

He really had set it, but he hadn't expected Claire to have that kind of wild idea. For a moment, he didn't know what to say.

The code needed to be changed. Next time, he'd switch it to facial recognition.

"Do you know something big has happened?" Claire said, her face full of worry. "Some reporters found out about what happened at the engagement party and actually came here. I came to apologize to President Sterling."

After saying that, Claire felt she had to apologize sincerely to President Sterling, so she looked at Wes with complete earnestness.

"President Sterling, this whole thing was my idea. I hope it hasn't caused you any trouble. I'll find a way to reduce the impact of this as much as possible. I absolutely won't make things difficult for you. I hope you won't hold me responsible."

After saying her piece, Claire bowed to Wes.

Her attitude was extremely sincere and serious.

She quietly turned her head to look at Julian beside her. When she saw him standing there stiff as a log without moving, she immediately reached out and tugged at him.

What are you standing there stunned for? Hurry up and apologize with me!

Did he want to keep his job or not?

Even though this had been to help her, Julian was also a main accomplice, so he should be apologizing with her. Besides, they were husband and wife—they should share hardship together.

Unfortunately, Julian seemed to completely not get what she meant. He still had that same dead look on his face and didn't move at all.

In the end, Claire could only straighten up, reach out and press down on the back of his head, making him bow to Wes along with her.

Julian's brows were tightly furrowed, his body taut.

He had been born with a silver spoon in his mouth and held a noble status. Other than in front of old Master Sterling, he had never bowed respectfully to anyone.

Sitting in the chair, when Wes saw the two people in front of him bowing to him like they were worshipping heaven and earth, he nearly pissed himself.

Under the desk, his legs had already started shaking.

Good God, in this lifetime he actually got President Sterling to bow to him. This was way too surreal!

But Wes still had the sense to play along. He coughed lightly into his fist and said, "About your matter... I already know..."

Marcus immediately added from the side, "Just now, following President Sterling's instructions, I went downstairs and drove all the reporters away. Miss Bennett, you don't need to worry."

Claire hadn't expected the matter to be resolved so easily, and President Sterling didn't seem to blame her either.

She smiled and praised him, "President Sterling, no wonder you're Ruby's brother. You're such a great guy!"

Wes forced a stiff smile, his face practically freezing in place.

This was torture. How much longer did he have to keep acting?

He squeezed his legs together, his expression stiff and twisted.

He was about to lose control!

At that moment, Marcus suddenly shot Wes a look, telling him to send Claire away.

Wes immediately understood. He cleared his throat and pointed at Julian as he ordered, "Since everything's fine now, Miss Bennett, please head back. You, take Miss Bennett downstairs right now."

Julian said to Claire, "Let's go. I'll take you down."

Claire still felt like she was dreaming a little.

She hadn't expected things to be resolved just like that.

It had gone way too smoothly, to the point where she felt like she ought to go buy a lottery ticket.

She rode the elevator downstairs with Julian, and when they got to the bottom, sure enough, all the reporters downstairs were gone.

The huge weight in Claire's heart finally lifted completely.

Then, as if she'd thought of something, her brows furrowed again, and her little face filled with distress.

"What's wrong?" Julian asked.

"The reporters may have left this time, but will what happened at the engagement party get exposed? If people find out you're a fake, you might get laughed at."

Only now did Claire realize she'd thought too little about all this. She had only wanted to slap them in the face and hadn't thought about the cleanup. Now so many holes had appeared that needed fixing.

And on top of that, she still had to stay in Chicago for a while longer.

"It won't be exposed."

"Huh? Are you sure?" Claire asked, a little unable to believe it.

Julian said seriously, "Just now President Sterling had people go deal with it. No one would dare expose it."

"That's great! That President Sterling is so nice!"
