Chapter 5
Chapter 5
I sit at the bar in stunned silence watching the last flash of blonde hair as Nora escapes through the front door. My mouth slightly ajar, my brow furrowed, I slowly turn back to the bar, grasping my gin and tonic in my hand.
What just happened?
I’m almost too stunned to process the fact that I was just … rejected? No, that can’t be. I almost want to laugh out loud. I can’t remember the last time a girl turned me down. Back in high school, maybe? I wrack my brain. Sure, girls play coy. They pretend they aren’t interested, they play hard to get. But flat out rejection?
Wow, that’s a foreign feeling. Jesus Christ, have I lost my edge?
I chuckle, still in shock, then take a sip of my drink. Nora Bennett. The prettiest woman I’ve ever seen, and the first woman I’ve encountered who doesn’t want to sleep with me. Some cruel, cosmic joke, it seems.
But instead of frustration, defeat, or even a sense of failure, a completely different emotion surfaces. Determination. She might have stormed out of here pretending she was disgusted with me, but I’m experienced enough to read a woman. I’d noticed that faint blush creeping up her neck, the way she’d look anywhere but directly at me. The way her gaze had lingered on my lips just a second too long. She isn’t as uninterested as she’s pretending to be.
I shake my head. Nora Bennett might just be the first girl to turn me down, but I’m not giving up without a fight.
