Ch. 123 - The Seat Beside Amara

Chapter 123

The Seat Beside Amara

The birth began during a hearing recess.

The judge had paused proceedings after the independent committee submitted its governance report. I was standing beside Priya when a contraction took my breath away.

“How far apart?” she asked.

“I do not know.”

Adrian was across the courtroom with Dr. Ortiz. He saw my expression and stopped before reaching for me.

“Ask,” I said.

“Can I come over?”

I nodded.

The next contraction came before he reached me.

The hospital bag was in the car. The medical contacts were listed. The hospital order prohibited family access.

For once, preparation had made the decision simple.

Dr. Ortiz called the hospital. Priya called security. Adrian called no one from Sterling.

The judge was informed.

The hearing remained paused.

Reporters noticed before we reached the elevator.

“Mrs. Sterling, are you in labor?”

I did not answer.

Adrian stepped between the cameras and the elevator without touching me.

“Medical privacy,” he said.

The elevator doors closed.

Inside, he looked terrified.

“You can be scared,” I said.

“I am.”

“Do not turn it into instructions.”

“I won’t.”

The hospital confirmed active labor when we arrived. The maternity nurse checked the order and asked who could enter.

“Me,” I said. “Adrian, Priya, and Camille.”

Adrian’s father attempted to enter twenty minutes later.

Security stopped him.

He said he was the baby’s grandfather.

The nurse said the order did not recognize that as medical authority.

Adrian heard the exchange from the hallway.

He did not go to the door.

He came back to me.

“He is outside,” he said.

“I know.”

“Do you want him removed?”

“The hospital can decide.”

He nodded.

The labor lasted through the afternoon. The hearing resumed without us. The judge ordered the parties to return after the birth, but no one in the room discussed the trust.

Camille sat beside the window. Priya kept the legal folder closed.

Adrian held my hand when I asked him to.

When I asked him to let go, he did.

The baby arrived at 6:41.

She cried before the nurse placed her against my chest.

Adrian looked at her and began to cry too.

No cameras entered.

No board member received an update.

No Sterling clause named the moment.

The nurse asked for the baby’s name.

I looked at Adrian.

He waited.

“Mira,” I said.

Adrian repeated it.

Mira.

The name belonged to neither the trust nor the company.

The hearing would continue.

The trial would continue.

The marriage would remain a question.

But our daughter had arrived without being claimed by anyone.
