Chapter 152
The Brother’s New Home
Felix and Nia made a decision that changed the friend group.
They bought a house together.
The news arrived in a message with no explanation. Felix sent an address, a photograph of a narrow porch, and the words we chose this.
Amara read the message first.
“Are they getting married?” she asked.
“I do not know.”
“Ask.”
I called Felix.
He answered from the porch.
“We are not getting married,” he said before I could ask.
“I did not ask.”
“You were going to.”
Nia appeared behind him.
“We bought a house,” she said. “We are choosing a life without requiring a ceremony to make it valid.”
Felix added, “There is no clause.”
The joke landed softly.
Amara smiled.
“Are you happy?” she asked.
Nia looked at Felix.
“We are learning.”
The phrase had become common among us.
Felix asked whether Mira could visit. We arranged a day with no cameras and no family questions.
At the house, the guest room held boxes and a broken lamp. Nia said they were not ready for visitors, then handed Amara a key.
“You can come when the room is messy,” she said.
Amara took it.
The decision had changed the friend group because it made a future visible without using marriage as proof. Felix and Nia did not need to defend the choice. They had already made it.
Felix asked me about the company.
“I work two days a week,” I said.
“That is not a company.”
“It is a life.”
He studied me.
“You sound different.”
“I have fewer people telling me who I am.”
Nia carried Mira while Amara inspected the garden. Felix looked nervous.
“She is going to break something,” he said.
“She is a baby.”
“That is not a guarantee.”
Mira reached for a leaf.
Nia moved the plant.
We all laughed.
It was an ordinary afternoon with no courtroom, company, or family strategy attached.
The ordinary afternoon felt like a gift.
