Ch. 164 - Adrian

Chapter 164

Adrian

Adrian learned to support Amara’s work by not asking for updates.

It was harder than it sounded. He had built his life around information: where people were, what they needed, which risk had moved closer. The foundation’s interviews were confidential, and Amara owed him nothing beyond the boundaries they had agreed on.

So he asked about dinner instead.

“Do you want noodles or rice?”

“Noodles.”

“Mira has already chosen rice.”

“Then rice.”

The ordinary exchange felt like a test he could pass by refusing to make it important.

Three weeks into her new job, a newspaper published an article about the foundation. It mentioned that one of its senior researchers was married to Adrian Sterling, but did not name Amara’s project.

The article called her “the billionaire’s wife turned reform advocate.”

Adrian wanted to demand a correction.

Amara read the article and stopped him.

“The description is inaccurate.”

“Exactly.”

“But a correction from you will make it a larger story about me.”

He put down his phone.

“What do you want?”

“A correction from the foundation, if my director agrees. And no statement from you.”

He agreed, though the choice left him without the familiar comfort of action.

The foundation requested a correction: Amara was a labor-rights researcher and the article had reduced her professional role to her marriage. The newspaper amended the line without publishing a follow-up.

At home, Adrian showed Amara the silent correction.

“That is what repair looks like sometimes,” she said.

“Small and uninteresting.”

“Most useful repairs are.”

Mira crawled beneath the table and came out holding one of Adrian’s shoes. He traded her a wooden block for it.

He had once believed a man proved love by making himself impossible to ignore. Now he understood that sometimes love meant keeping his name out of a room where someone else was trying to stand.
