Ch. 167 - Amara

Chapter 167

Amara

Felix and Nia invited Amara to see their new office.

It occupied the back room of their house and contained two desks, a folding table, and a window that looked onto a neighbor’s lemon tree. They had named the project Common Ground, though neither of them liked the phrase when it sounded too polished.

“We are helping people leave situations,” Nia explained. “Not convincing them to stay in healthier versions of the same situation.”

Amara liked the distinction.

Their first workshop was for spouses who had worked unpaid inside family businesses. The session asked participants to map labor, ownership, and decision-making separately. The maps rarely matched.

One woman discovered that she owned no part of the company but was expected to answer every emergency call. Another realized that her husband called her a partner in public and an assistant at home.

Amara did not tell her story. She helped the participants name theirs.

Afterward, Felix asked whether she wanted to join Common Ground as an advisor.

“No.”

He looked disappointed.

“I want to be able to come here without another role,” she added.

Nia grinned. “You can be a friend. It is unpaid, but there are snacks.”

“That is the first unpaid position I am considering.”

They ate lemon cake by the window.

On the drive home, Amara received a message from Adrian asking whether she needed dinner saved.

She answered yes, then added that she would be late.

He replied, No explanation required.

She read it twice.

The sentence was not romantic. It was better than romantic. It was a small removal of pressure from a life that had once been built out of pressure.

When she arrived home, Adrian had left a plate covered in foil. Mira was asleep. The house was quiet.

Amara ate at the counter and realized that independence did not have to mean isolation. It meant choosing which ties were allowed to ask something of her.
