Adrian
The succession vote was scheduled for the week Mira began walking.
Adrian arrived at the board meeting with a bruise on his palm from catching himself against a table. Mira had taken three steps, fallen onto the rug, and looked more surprised than frightened.
Amara had laughed. Adrian had nearly cried.
The committee selected Priya Shah as chair by a clear majority. Sofia became chief operating officer. The external specialist joined the audit committee. No family member received a guaranteed seat.
The board asked Adrian to remain as a non-executive adviser for one year, with a written limit on his access to confidential personnel decisions.
He signed.
The old Adrian would have read the limits as an insult. The new one read them as proof that the promise had finally become a structure.
Priya shook his hand after the vote.
“You will be tempted to call me when you disagree.”
“I will.”
“Then call Sofia first.”
“Understood.”
The meeting ended without a family photograph. Communications asked whether they should announce the transition as a new chapter for Sterling.
Priya said, “Announce the chair. Do not narrate my appointment through his redemption.”
Adrian smiled.
At home, Mira stood beside the sofa, gripping the cushion. Amara crouched several feet away.
“Come here,” she said.
Mira shook her head.
Amara waited.
Mira chose the distance, then took one step. Adrian did not reach for her. She took another, wobbled, and sat down.
Everyone clapped except Mira, who looked offended by the noise.
Adrian lowered his hands.
“No applause,” he said. “She did not ask for it.”
Amara looked at him, then at Mira.
Mira reached up. This time, Adrian waited until she chose him.
The company had a new chair. The child had a new skill. Neither belonged to him.
