Chapter 178
Adrian
Adrian’s first day as an adviser began with an invitation to overrule the chair.
An investor called to say Priya was inexperienced and that Adrian had a duty to protect the company. The old language returned easily: duty, family, stability, protection.
Adrian asked the investor to send the concern to the board secretary.
“You can answer now.”
“No. I cannot answer outside the process.”
“You built the process.”
“That is why I know where it applies.”
The investor threatened to withdraw capital. Adrian logged the call and ended it.
Priya received the report before lunch. She thanked him and asked whether he wanted to be involved in the review.
“Only if you think my knowledge is necessary.”
“I do not.”
“Then I am not.”
Priya approved the answer.
The investor withdrew one position and sold it to another fund. Sterling’s share price moved slightly. Commentators called the change a sign of uncertainty.
Adrian watched the coverage for five minutes, then closed it.
Amara found him reading Mira’s board book.
“You are allowed to be worried.”
“I am worried.”
“You are also allowed not to act.”
He nodded.
The distinction felt almost physical. Worry had once been the first step toward control. Now it could simply be a feeling that passed through him without becoming a command.
That evening, Priya sent the final review. The board found no misconduct and no need for Adrian’s intervention. The company remained intact.
Mira fell asleep in his arms during the reading of a book about a fox who kept trying the same door.
Adrian closed the book before reaching the ending.
Some doors were not meant to open because a powerful person had become impatient.
