Adrian
By the time Mira turned two, the Sterling name had become less useful at home.
It could not persuade her to wear shoes. It could not make her nap. It could not prevent her from drawing a purple line across the kitchen wall.
Adrian found the drawing after a difficult board call. He stood in front of it for a full minute.
Amara came in carrying a cloth.
“Do not say it,” she warned.
“I was going to ask whether the wall was load-bearing.”
“You were going to ask whether we could keep the drawing.”
He looked at the purple line. “Can we?”
“One section.”
They framed a small piece of the wall after repainting the rest. The frame held no signature and no explanation.
Mira was too young to understand why the adults took a square out of a wall. She only understood that some marks could be preserved and some had to be cleaned.
That distinction became the theme of the year’s family meeting.
The adults reviewed which records, rules, and stories should continue. They removed the phrase “Sterling legacy” from the family policy. They replaced it with “shared history and chosen responsibility.”
Felix objected that the new phrase was too long.
Nia said it was supposed to be difficult to put on a banner.
Everyone agreed.
After the meeting, Adrian and Amara walked home with Mira between them. She held one hand from each parent but let go whenever she saw something interesting.
They waited every time.
The marriage had started as a clause designed to prevent a loss. It had become a practice of releasing what could not be owned.
At the corner, Mira ran toward a yellow flower. Adrian began to follow, then stopped when Amara touched his arm.
“She knows where the path ends.”
They watched her bend over the flower, free and briefly still.
