Adrian read Amara’s succession guide after publication.
He recognized several mistakes he had made before the guide named them: treating access as affection, treating obedience as stability, and calling a person “the future” when he wanted them to remain available.
The last section addressed spouses.
Marriage does not make one partner a custodian of the other partner’s family.
Adrian read the line three times.
Amara was in the next room, helping Mira build a tower. He did not ask whether the line was about him. The answer was obvious and irrelevant.
Instead, he sent the guide to Priya with a note suggesting the company adopt it as a voluntary resource for family members.
Priya replied that the company could link to it but should not claim ownership.
He agreed.
At the next board meeting, someone asked whether the company should hire Amara to consult on the resource.
Priya said no. The guide was useful precisely because it was independent.
Adrian felt pride and loss at the same time. He let both remain.
That evening, Mira’s tower collapsed. She stared at the blocks and began again without crying.
“She has your patience,” Adrian said.
“She has her own patience,” Amara answered.
He smiled. The correction had become part of the household’s language.
When Mira finished the second tower, she left the room. The structure remained standing for less than a minute.
It did not need to last forever to have been hers.
