Adrian
The company’s first leadership retreat without a Sterling family member lasted two days.
Adrian was not invited. He found out from the public calendar.
His first feeling was exclusion. His second was relief. His third was embarrassment that relief had taken so long.
Priya sent a short update afterward. The leaders had decided to close one division, invest in another, and replace the family’s informal succession assumptions with a written process.
Adrian replied, “Thank you for telling me.”
He did not ask whether the retreat had gone well. He did not ask to see the minutes. The board had not authorized him to know those things.
At dinner, Amara noticed his quietness.
“You were left out of a meeting.”
“Yes.”
“Do you want sympathy?”
“I want to complain for ten minutes, then stop.”
She set a timer.
He complained about the chairs, the food he imagined they had eaten, and the possibility that the new leaders had laughed at one of his old presentations.
When the timer rang, he stopped.
Amara removed it from the table.
“You may complain again tomorrow if the feeling returns.”
“That sounds like a policy.”
“It is a household policy.”
Mira was in the next room singing a tune with no recognizable words. Adrian listened and realized he had not heard the company’s quarterly numbers all day.
The absence did not feel like a hole.
It felt like a room he had finally stopped renting.
