Chapter 198
Adrian
Years later, Mira would decide what the agreement meant.
Not because the family would hand her a legacy, but because she would be allowed to read the records and disagree with them. She might keep the policies, change them, or leave them behind. The choice would be hers.
For now, she was asleep upstairs with one hand curled around the wooden tiger from Everland.
Adrian stood at the window while Amara placed the final copy of the agreement in the home folder. The house was quiet except for the sound of a page closing.
“Do you regret the original clause?” she asked.
“Every day.”
“Do you regret what came after?”
He turned toward her.
“No. But I will never use the good that followed to excuse the harm that began it.”
Amara nodded. She had never needed him to offer a cleaner answer.
They went upstairs together. Mira woke briefly and reached toward them, then changed her mind and turned over.
They waited.
After a moment, she reached again.
Adrian took her hand only when she offered it. Amara sat beside them, leaving space on the other side.
The contract had saved his inheritance, then threatened to define their lives. In the end, it became something smaller and more useful: a record of what they had chosen to stop repeating.
No clause could promise the future.
That was why the future remained open.
