Jonah closed the archive on-screen. "You control it."

Petra laughed softly.

"He said that last time too," she told Lila, using the source name Jonah had never published.

Lila stopped laughing. "How did you get that name?"

Petra tapped the blackmail message. It included a private phrase from Lila's original upload receipt and the alias Jonah had used before he joined Verity.

Aria asked to see the metadata. The message had been sent through a civic campaign server, not an anonymous mailbox. Its routing token matched the same Halcyon Civic account that had purchased captions for her video.

"They are using old victims to make new evidence look personal," Aria said.

Lila looked at her. "You are the new face. I was the rehearsal."

Jonah did not defend himself. He opened his archive and listed every file he had ever received from Lila's case. One source clip was missing, not deleted but replaced by a placeholder with a Verity watermark.

"I never gave Verity that footage," Lila said.

"Someone gave it to them under your name," Jonah replied.

Mei called from City Hall. The procurement hearing had been moved forward to 10:00, and Halcyon had submitted a proposal promising to prevent synthetic harassment. Gavin planned to testify that Aria's audit had created the crisis.

Aria asked Lila for permission to use the original receipt. Lila hesitated, then placed the document on the table.

"You can show the chain," she said. "You cannot show my private footage."

Jonah scanned the receipt. The file hash matched the hash of the video currently trending, which meant the platform had received the real source before someone edited the face onto it.

"The manipulation happened after upload," he said.

Petra leaned over the screen. "Then find the account that changed it."

The account graph opened with a node that belonged to Verity's executive override. A second node sat behind it, hidden by a municipal firewall. Aria recognized the firewall's contractor code from Mei's contract review.

The door opened. Gavin stood outside with a city attorney and a camera crew.

"Aria," he said, "we can settle this if you sign the correction and withdraw your audit."

"And if I do not?"

He turned the camera toward Lila. "Then every old file in Jonah's archive becomes discoverable."

Lila reached for the receipt. Jonah caught her wrist only long enough to stop the paper from falling. He released her immediately.

Aria stepped in front of the camera. "Record this. I will not sign a lie."

Gavin's smile hardened. "Then the hearing begins with your face on the screen."

The city attorney's tablet chimed. A new upload had started from inside the room, using Aria's credentials.

Aria grabbed the tablet before Gavin could close the screen. The upload contained a file named LILA_PRIVATE_FINAL, and its destination was the city hearing's public docket.

"You cannot publish that," Lila said.

"I am not publishing it. Someone is."

Jonah traced the upload request to the hidden node behind the municipal firewall. The request had been signed with the same source alias he had used years earlier, making him legally responsible for the release.

"They want me to take the blame," he said.

Petra connected a clean drive. "Then give them a different signature."

Aria copied the request headers without opening the private file. The headers contained a time code from the stage camera and a device fingerprint belonging to Dean Solis.

Gavin reached for the tablet. Mei blocked him with the procurement folder.

"Touch it and every camera in this building becomes a witness," Mei said.

The city attorney ordered security to remove them. Lila stepped in front of the camera crew and held up her original receipt.

"This file is mine," she said. "You do not get to use it as a threat."

The upload paused at ninety-eight percent. Aria saw one option: revoke the credential and destroy the trace, or let the file finish and expose the person who had signed it.

Jonah looked at her. "If you stop it, they call us afraid."

"If I let it finish, Lila pays again."

The progress bar reached ninety-nine. The room's screens switched from Aria's face to Lila's private footage.

Lila pulled the nearest cable free. The image continued on every other screen.

"It has crossed the city network," Petra said.

Aria opened the captured headers and found a second destination, a sealed evidence server used by the procurement board. If the file completed, the board would treat it as authenticated material.

Mei moved to the emergency terminal. "I can suspend the hearing, but only if I call this a live threat."

"It is," Aria said. "To Lila and to every person whose face can be copied next."

The progress bar vanished. A confirmation window appeared with Aria's name and one button marked RELEASE.

She put her hand on the mouse.

Lila placed her fingers over Aria's wrist, making the cost visible. "If you release it, they will call me collateral."

"If I do not, they will call you evidence."

Jonah offered a third option: release the headers, not the private footage. The board would see the chain without seeing Lila's face.

Aria selected the header package. The confirmation window changed to PUBLISH FORENSIC METADATA.

Gavin lunged for the terminal. Mei hit the emergency stop.

The room went black, and the upload completed in the dark.

Emergency lights returned in red strips. Every phone in the room chimed with the same notification: FORENSIC METADATA RECEIVED.

Lila looked at Aria. "Now they know the file was altered."

Outside, Gavin's camera crew began shouting. The hearing had started without them.

Mei opened the city docket. The metadata package appeared as the first public exhibit, attached to Aria's audit instead of the misconduct referral.

Gavin's face vanished from the hearing stream.

The chair called for Aria's testimony, and the microphone opened before she could prepare a single sentence.

Every camera in the hearing turned toward her. Behind the glass, Lila still held the private receipt, waiting to see whether Aria would protect the record or herself.

Aria touched the microphone. The hearing timer began.

The first question came from Gavin's counsel.

"Did you steal the video?"

Aria looked at Lila.

Lila did not look away. The hearing camera framed them together, turning a private decision into public evidence. Jonah moved the receipt out of Gavin's reach, while Mei opened a second channel to the city clerk. Every action created a record, but every record also gave the people behind the upload another target.
