Chapter 10
The Name Behind the Name
Tessa stood in the bustling Ward Seven of St. Ormond, the fluorescent lights flickering overhead, casting a sterile glow on the chaos around her. People moved with a frenetic energy, clipboards clutched in one hand, phones glued to their ears. The air was thick with tension, a palpable hum of anxiety that clung to Tessa’s skin. She watched as colleagues rushed by, their faces a mask of purpose, but their eyes betrayed a shared uncertainty. It felt eerily choreographed, as if they were all performing a play where the script had been handed down too quickly, and no one dared to question the narrative.
She glanced at Callum, who stood beside her, his presence a steadying force against the whirlwind of activity. He was close enough that the warmth radiating from him seeped into her, grounding her in the moment. He didn’t touch her, and that unspoken restraint felt significant. It was a choice, a silent acknowledgment of the distance they were navigating.
“Midpoint: the apparent culprit is exposed as a pawn; the real conspiracy is larger,” Tessa murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, mindful of eavesdroppers.
Callum’s brow furrowed slightly, the intensity in his blue eyes sharpening. “Then we make them show us where it leads.”
Their voices blended into the background noise as they began to sift through the details others overlooked. There was a time stamp on a report, a misplaced access card that had gone unnoticed, and an anomaly in a chart that didn’t align with the author’s signature. Tessa recalled Arthur’s warning that the truth wouldn’t come as a confession but as something ordinary, a puzzle piece that had been tampered with so much it almost seemed to fit.
The door to the break room swung open, and Tessa’s heart raced. She felt the weight of her own intuition pressing down on her. If they were right, the proof they sought could save them—but it could also drag their loved ones into danger. Callum caught her gaze, his expression shifting as he recognized the turmoil within her.
“Tell me what you need,” he urged, his voice low and steady.
For the first time since the crisis erupted, Tessa found herself at a loss for words. She studied him, taking in the resolve etched on his face, the way he was ready to shoulder whatever burden lay ahead. It struck her then that moving forward didn’t require a plan; it required trust. They were in this together, and she could no longer pretend she could bear it alone.
“I just—” she began, but the words tangled in her throat. Instead, she took a breath and nodded toward the door. “Let’s go.”
They stepped into the break room, the scent of stale coffee and disinfectant mingling in the air. The tables were littered with half-eaten sandwiches and crumpled papers—evidence of the long hours and sleepless nights. Tessa’s eyes darted to the corner, where a shadowy figure sat, scribbling notes. She recognized the name at the bottom of the ledger they’d uncovered; it belonged to someone who should have been in the clear, someone sitting just a few feet away.
“Can you see who it is?” Callum whispered, leaning in closer, his breath warm against her ear.
Tessa squinted, her heart pounding. “It’s Dr. Malone,” she replied, her voice barely a whisper, panic creeping in. “He shouldn’t be here. He was supposed to be off today.”
“Then he’s our lead,” Callum said, determination igniting in his eyes. “We need to find out what he knows.”
Tessa nodded, her mind racing with possibilities as they moved to intercept him. Each step felt heavier, charged with the weight of their discovery. She could almost hear her heartbeat echoing in her ears, drowning out the noise of the break room. They approached Dr. Malone, who looked up with a start, his eyes widening as he met Tessa’s gaze.
“Tessa? Callum?” he stammered, the surprise quickly morphing into something guarded. “What are you doing here?”
“Just a few questions,” Tessa managed, forcing her voice to remain steady despite the tension crackling between them. “About the project.”
Dr. Malone’s expression hardened. “I can’t discuss that here. It’s too risky.”
“Risky?” Callum interjected, his tone sharp. “You’re the one sitting on information that could expose a threat to everyone in this building.”
Malone’s eyes darted to the door, and Tessa sensed the panic rising in him. “You don’t understand—”
Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered ominously, plunging the room into shadows for a split second. Tessa caught the flicker of fear in Malone’s eyes just before the lights stabilized again.
“Tell us what you know,” she pressed, desperation creeping into her voice. They were so close, yet the gap felt insurmountable.
Malone opened his mouth to respond, but before he could utter a word, a deafening crash echoed from the hallway outside, followed by the unmistakable sound of hurried footsteps. Tessa's heart sank. Whatever they had unearthed was about to spiral out of control.
“Run!” Callum shouted, grabbing Tessa’s hand, and they took off, the echo of their footsteps swallowed by the chaos behind them. As they sprinted down the corridor, Tessa couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being hunted, the truth looming behind them like a shadow ready to pounce.
