The Ward Seven Promise

Ch. 15 - The Evidence on Display

Chapter 15

The Evidence on Display

Tessa had learned the hard way that a crisis became most dangerous when everyone thought they understood it. In Ward Seven at St. Ormond, the air was thick with a tense energy, punctuated by the sound of clipboards snapping shut and phones buzzing with urgent notifications. Each staff member moved with purpose, their faces set in masks of professionalism, but Tessa could feel the tension beneath the surface. The official story had settled too quickly, like dust in the air after a storm. She sensed its edges every time someone dodged a direct question.

Beside her, Callum stood close, enough so that their bodies formed a silhouette against the sterile backdrop of the ward. He didn’t touch her, a deliberate choice that allowed Tessa to navigate the distance between them. It felt like the calm before a storm, and she appreciated the restraint, even as the uncertainty of their situation loomed large.

"The couple stages a public reversal using evidence; it appears to work," Tessa murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, her eyes scanning the room.

"Then we make them show us where it leads," Callum replied, his tone steady but laced with an urgency that mirrored her own thoughts.

They had been piecing together the fragments of a puzzle that everyone else had dismissed. A time stamp that contradicted the timeline, a misplaced access card lying abandoned on a desk, a line in a chart that didn’t match the handwriting of the person who’d supposedly authored it. Arthur had warned Tessa that the truth would not arrive neatly packaged; it would emerge from the shadows, disguised as something ordinary, something easily overlooked.

As the next door swung open, a wave of applause erupted from the crowd gathered beyond the glass partition, oblivious to the undercurrents swirling in the air. Tessa's heart raced as the realization hit her: the proof they’d been chasing had just vanished from the screen, leaving only a flicker of uncertainty behind.

The cost of being right was palpable, and Tessa felt the weight of it pressing down on her. Yes, the evidence could save them, but it could also pull their loved ones into a dangerous spotlight. Callum’s gaze caught hers, a silent understanding passing between them. He sensed her turmoil, and before she could voice her fears, his hand found the small of her back, warm through the thin fabric of her blouse. The touch ignited a spark of comfort, but it also made her acutely aware of the stakes.

"Tell me what you need," he said, his voice low and steady, cutting through the chaos around them.

For the first time since this disaster had begun to unravel, Tessa hesitated, her mind racing through options that felt insufficient. She looked at him, really looked at him, and saw the control he was relinquishing, the way he was willing to follow her lead even when the path ahead was fraught with uncertainty. It was an honest choice—one that resonated deeply within her.

“I don’t know,” she finally admitted, her voice barely above a whisper, the words feeling heavy. She could feel the weight of his gaze, the way it anchored her in the storm. “But we can’t stop now. We have to keep moving.”

Callum nodded, his expression resolute. “Then let’s find out what really happened.”

They pushed through the crowd, navigating the sea of eager faces, all clapping for something they didn’t fully comprehend. The applause echoed off the sterile white walls, but Tessa felt a sense of urgency pulse through her veins. She needed to get to the data room, to see if they could retrieve the evidence before it slipped further from their grasp.

“Over there,” she pointed toward a glass-walled office where the screens flickered ominously, casting shadows across the floor. “If we can just get a glimpse of the server logs…”

Callum fell in step beside her, determination etched into his features. “I’ll distract them. You get what you need.”

“No,” Tessa said sharply, grabbing his arm. “No more distractions. We do this together.”

His eyes softened for a moment, and Tessa could see the conflict there, the concern for her safety battling with his instinct to protect. “All right,” he conceded, his voice a low murmur. “Together, then.”

As they approached the office, Tessa steeled herself, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel the thrill of the chase, but the gnawing anxiety of what they might uncover clawed at her insides. The crowd’s applause faded behind them, replaced by the rhythmic beeping of machines, a stark reminder of the stakes.

The door loomed ahead, and Tessa reached for the handle, her breath hitching as she prepared to step into the unknown. But just as she was about to push it open, a shout rang out from behind them, sharp and urgent.

“Tessa! Callum!” A voice cut through the noise, and Tessa turned, dread settling in her stomach.

Behind her, a figure emerged from the crowd, face pale and eyes wide with panic. It was Arthur, and Tessa could see the warning in his expression before he even spoke. “You need to get out of here. Now.”
