Ch. 18 - After the Glass Settled

Chapter 18

After the Glass Settled

Tessa had learned that a crisis became most dangerous after everyone decided they understood it. In Ward Seven at St. Ormond, the air was thick with urgency. Nurses and doctors glided past, clipboards in hand, heads bent towards their phones, each absorbed in their own version of the same comforting lie. Tessa could feel the tension in the atmosphere, a taut string ready to snap. Every time someone avoided a direct question, she could almost see the edges of the official story forming around them, sharp and dangerous.

Beside her, Callum stood with an unyielding presence, his posture suggesting they were a united front. He didn't touch her—an intentional choice that allowed Tessa to dictate their proximity, to assert control in a situation where everything felt chaotic. She appreciated that restraint, even as it made her heart race.

“Aftermath: legal/emotional resolution, a deliberate real vow, and one warm forward-looking image,” Tessa muttered, her voice barely above a whisper, laced with urgency.

Callum’s gaze remained steady, a flicker of determination in his eyes. “Then we make them show us where it leads,” he replied, his tone low but firm.

Together, they pursued the details that everyone else had brushed aside—a time stamp that didn’t align, a misplaced access card, a line in a chart that raised too many questions about the author’s legitimacy. Arthur had warned her that the truth would not come wrapped in a neat confession; it would emerge as something ordinary, a detail that had been polished too hard to disguise its flaws.

As the door to the next examination room swung open, Tessa felt the weight of what being right could cost. The evidence they sought could shield them from the storm ahead, but it also had the potential to drag their loved ones into danger. Callum’s eyes flicked to hers, understanding the silent calculus she was wrestling with. His hand found the small of her back, warmth radiating through the fabric of her blouse, though he kept it still, waiting for her to respond.

“Tell me what you need,” he said, his voice steady, revealing a depth of trust she hadn’t fully realized existed between them.

For the first time since the incident had unfolded, Tessa didn’t respond with a strategic plan. She searched Callum’s face, recognizing the control he was relinquishing to her. In that moment, surrounded by the sterile smell of antiseptic and the muffled sounds of medical machinery, she made the only honest choice available: to keep moving forward with him, wherever that path might lead.

The sunlight streaming through the high windows cast a warm glow over the linoleum floor, illuminating the chaos of the ward and, for a fleeting moment, Tessa felt a flicker of hope. The future they had clung to in a world of uncertainty no longer belonged to those who had tried to dictate it. It was theirs to shape.

“Let’s check the records on the second floor,” she said, her voice gathering strength. “If we can find the access logs from last week, we might uncover something crucial.”

Callum nodded, his expression resolute. “Right behind you.”

They moved through the ward, weaving past busy staff and patients. Tessa’s heart raced not just from the adrenaline of their search but from the thrill of Callum at her side. She could feel his presence, a steadying force as they navigated the chaos. Each step felt like a small rebellion against the narrative that had been imposed on them.

They reached the staircase, the sounds of the ward fading into a muted hum behind them. Tessa took a deep breath, the air cooler as they ascended to the second floor. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting a harsh glow that emphasized the urgency of their mission.

“Do you think anyone’s noticed we’re gone?” Callum asked, glancing back down the stairs.

“Probably,” Tessa replied, her mind racing. “But we can’t afford to worry about that now.”

They stepped onto the second floor, the atmosphere shifting. The administrative offices were quieter, the sterile scent of antiseptic replaced by the faint aroma of coffee. Tessa felt a chill run down her spine as they approached the records room, the door slightly ajar.

“Here,” she whispered, pushing the door open cautiously. Inside, rows of filing cabinets towered above them, the faint buzz of a computer humming in the corner.

As Tessa rifled through the cabinets, a sudden noise startled her—a shuffling sound from behind them.

“Did you hear that?” Callum’s voice was low, tense.

Before she could respond, the door slammed shut. The sudden sound echoed in the small space, reverberating off the walls like a gunshot. Tessa’s heart raced as she spun around, fear flooding her senses.

“Callum,” she breathed, the weight of uncertainty pressing down on her. “What do we do?”

But before he could answer, the lights flickered again and went out, plunging them into darkness. The last thing Tessa heard was the sound of footsteps approaching from the other side of the door.
