Chapter 3
Altered Records
Tessa recognized the forged signature before she recognized the threat. The loops were hers, but the pressure was wrong.
"Someone has practiced my hand," she told Callum.
He shut the archive door. "And they expect you to sign the original next."
The document authorized a transfer of her father's account to a private clinic owned by Sloane's family. If Tessa refused, administration could claim she had interfered with treatment. If she agreed, the only witness to the fraud would disappear.
Callum removed his director's badge and placed it beside the form. "I can block the transfer for six hours. After that, the board votes."
"Why only six?"
"Because someone on my executive team has been feeding them my access codes."
The revelation changed the shape of their arrangement. Their fake engagement was no longer a shield for Tessa alone. It was an audit conducted in public, with both of them exposed.
Priya arrived with a sealed specimen bag. Inside was a medication vial from Ward Seven, mislabeled with a date after the dose had been administered.
"I found it in the disposal bin," she said. "Sloane's assistant tried to remove the record."
Footsteps sounded outside. Callum took Tessa's hand for the cameras in the corridor, then released it when the door closed.
"We make the engagement real enough to control the narrative," he said. "You stand with me at the board meeting. I will put the forged records on the screen."
"And if the insider is in the room?"
"Then they will have to watch us name the evidence."
Tessa picked up the vial. "No. We do more than name it. We force them to choose which lie to defend."
She opened the door. Callum followed, their hands apart but their plan joined. At the end of the hall, Sloane waited with the transfer papers and a smile that said he had already won. title: "Chapter 3: Unraveling the Truth" chapter: 3 bookId: the-ward-seven-promise language: en wordCount: 789 publishedAt: 2026-07-14 status: published
The dim light of the office formed a cocoon around Callum and Tessa, isolating them from the frenetic energy of the ER just beyond the door. Papers lay scattered across the desk, their contents threatening to unravel a mystery that had ensnared Tessa’s father, Arthur. Each document bore the weight of urgency, the air heavy with the scent of old paper and the faint antiseptic lingering from the hospital.
“Why would someone alter these records?” Tessa murmured, her finger tracing a line on the page, the frustration evident in her voice. The treatment records were supposed to be straightforward, but the discrepancies leapt out at her, misleading dates, incorrect medication dosages. “It’s like they’re hiding something.”
“Financial gain, perhaps?” Callum suggested, his brow furrowed as he leaned closer, his dark hair falling into his eyes. He flipped the page, searching for answers. “Or maybe it’s more sinister. We need to find out who had access to these files.”
Tessa leaned back in her chair, her frustration bubbling to the surface, mingling with fear. “This feels like a conspiracy. My father was onto something big, and now it’s a race against time to figure it out.”
The door swung open abruptly, and Priya rushed in, her face pale, a stark contrast to the calm atmosphere they had tried to create. “Tessa, you need to see this,” she said, breathless, holding up a tablet like it was a bomb about to detonate. On the screen was a grainy security cam still of a figure lurking in a shadowy corridor of the hospital.
“Who is that?” Tessa’s heart thundered in her chest, each beat a reminder of the stakes.
“I don’t know,” Priya admitted, shaking her head as she scrolled through the images. “But I checked the logs. They don’t have clearance to be in that area. Whoever they are, they’re connected to your father’s case.”
Callum stood, his demeanor shifting from casual to alert. “I’ll run a background check. We need to identify this person. If they’re involved, it could lead us to the motive behind everything.” His voice was steady, but Tessa could see the determination flickering in his eyes, a fire ignited by the urgency of their situation.
As Priya continued swiping through the footage, Tessa felt a chill seep into her bones. It was as if an unseen weight had settled over them, a premonition of danger that made her skin crawl. “It’s like we’re piecing together a puzzle with missing pieces,” she said, glancing at Callum, who was already formulating their next steps.
“Then we’ll find those pieces,” he replied, a fierce resolve in his tone.
But just as they began to strategize, a chilling thought gripped Tessa. What if they were being watched? The walls of the office felt like they were closing in, the shadows stretching longer with each tick of the clock.
Her phone buzzed violently against the wood of the desk, shattering her focus. She picked it up, heart racing as she saw the message flash across the screen,a single, chilling sentence that turned her blood to ice: “Stop digging, or your father will pay the price.”
Tessa’s breath hitched, and she exchanged a horrified glance with Callum. The gravity of the situation crashed down on them, a tidal wave of realization that they were in deeper than they had ever intended.
“What does that mean?” Priya whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
“I don’t know,” Tessa replied, her mind racing. “But we can’t stop now. We have to figure out what’s happening before it’s too late.”
Callum’s eyes darkened, and he clenched his fists momentarily before relaxing his grip. “We need to be careful. If they know we’re onto them, they might escalate things.”
Tessa nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. The stakes were rising, and every second felt like a countdown. She could almost hear the clock ticking down to something inevitable and dangerous.
“Let’s get back to work,” Tessa said, the fire of determination igniting within her. “We won’t let them intimidate us.”
As Callum and Priya gathered the documents, Tessa’s gaze drifted back to the tablet. The figure on the screen seemed to loom larger, a specter of the danger that lay ahead. She swallowed hard, a mix of fear and resolve swirling inside her. They were standing on the precipice of a dark secret, and Tessa was unwilling to retreat.
The flickering fluorescent light overhead buzzed ominously as they dove back into their research, but in the depths of her mind, the warning echoed: they were not alone, and someone was watching.
Tessa closed the file. "Then we stop searching quietly."
Callum took the forged consent form and the medication vial. "We put both on the board screen."
"And if the insider is present?"
"They will have to choose which lie to defend."
Priya arrived with a witness statement from the night shift. The nurse had seen Sloane's assistant remove the original chart. Tessa signed the statement, then handed it to Callum.
"No more private promises," she said. "Everything goes into the record."
Together they walked toward the boardroom, carrying the evidence that could save her father and end Callum's career. Neither of them released the other's hand.
