Chapter 5
The Hand She Did Not Pull Away From
Tessa had learned that crises became most dangerous when everyone thought they understood them. In Ward Seven at St. Ormond Hospital, the atmosphere buzzed with urgency, a mix of hushed voices and frantic footsteps. Nurses and doctors moved purposefully, their clipboards clutched tightly, phones pressed to ears, all of them weaving the same fabricated narrative. Tessa could feel the edges of that story prickling at her fingertips every time someone skillfully dodged a direct question.
Beside her, Callum stood close, a silent sentinel. His presence was reassuring yet electrifying, the space between them charged with unspoken tension. He didn’t touch her, and that restraint mattered. It allowed Tessa to navigate the distance between them, giving her a semblance of control amidst the chaos swirling around them.
“The protagonist sees a private vulnerability and chooses to help once,” Tessa murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, her gaze fixed on the door ahead.
“Then we make them show us where it leads,” Callum replied, his eyes scanning the corridor, searching for something that would crack the surface of the official narrative.
They were tracking details everyone else had overlooked: a time stamp that didn’t align, a misplaced access card, a line in a chart that seemed incongruous with the signature that followed it. Arthur had warned Tessa that the truth wouldn't come wrapped in a neat confession. It would present itself as something mundane, a detail someone had tried too hard to normalize.
When the next door swung open, Tessa felt the weight of what lay beyond. The proof they sought could save them, but it also held the potential to drag their loved ones into danger. Callum’s eyes flitted to hers, and he saw the calculation behind her gaze before she could voice it. His hand found the small of her back, warm through her blouse, grounding her momentarily before it stilled, a reminder of the stakes they were balancing.
“Tell me what you need,” he urged, his voice steady, though she could hear the underlying tension.
For the first time since the disaster had begun, Tessa hesitated. She looked up at him, taking in the control he was relinquishing, the vulnerability behind his steady demeanor. Instead of formulating a plan, she made the only honest choice available: she nodded, and they moved together down the corridor.
The rhythmic beeping of monitors filled the air, punctuating the silence that enveloped them. Tessa felt her heart race in time with the pulsing lights overhead. Each step they took was deliberate, measured. They passed a nurse who glanced at them with a flicker of recognition, her brow furrowed with concern. Tessa's stomach tightened; she could feel the weight of scrutiny pressing down.
“Did you hear about the incident in Room 312?” the nurse whispered as they approached, her voice low enough to avoid drawing attention.
Tessa paused, her breath catching. “What happened?”
“They say it was a mix-up… but I overheard the doctors talking. Something doesn’t add up. They were anxious, restless.” The nurse glanced over her shoulder, then leaned closer. “Be careful. There’s more going on here than they’re letting on.”
Tessa exchanged a glance with Callum, her pulse quickening. This was it—the moment the truth began to unravel from the tightly knit fabric of deception.
“Thanks,” Tessa said, forcing a smile, and they continued down the corridor, the nurse’s words echoing in her mind.
As they reached the end of the hall, Tessa felt an electric charge in the air. The monitor on the wall shifted rhythm, the sound morphing into an urgent alert. A moment later, an automated voice crackled over the PA system, announcing a code alert. Panic surged through Tessa’s veins.
“Do you think it’s related?” she asked, urgency creeping into her tone.
“Could be,” Callum replied, his jaw set. “We need to find out what’s happening.”
Before she could respond, a series of footsteps thundered down the hall, and a group of medical staff rushed past them, faces drawn and tense. Tessa’s instincts flared. Whatever was happening, it was escalating, and they were right in the thick of it.
“Let’s check the records room,” Callum said, his voice steady despite the chaos. “We need to look at those charts again.”
With a determined nod, Tessa followed him, her heart thumping in her chest. They rounded the corner, only to find the door they needed locked tight. Tessa pressed her palm against the cool metal, frustration bubbling within her.
“Damn it!” she whispered. “We can’t afford to waste time.”
And then, just as she turned to Callum, the lights flickered ominously. The sound of shouts erupted from the ward, and a cold dread settled in her stomach.
“Something’s wrong,” she said, her voice trembling as she glanced toward the chaos unfolding. “We need to go.”
They moved in tandem, drawing closer to the chaos, but as they reached the end of the corridor, Tessa caught a glimpse of a figure darting away, a familiar silhouette that sent her heart racing.
“Wait!” she shouted, but the figure vanished around the corner.
“Who was that?” Callum demanded, his eyes narrowing with concern.
“I don’t know,” Tessa breathed, panic rising. “But we have to find out.”
As they turned to pursue, the lights went out completely, plunging them into darkness.
