Chapter 7
The Room Prepared for Her
Tessa had learned that a crisis became most dangerous when everyone decided they understood it. In Ward Seven at St. Ormond, the air was thick with urgency. Nurses and administrators bustled about, their clipboards clutched tightly, phones pressed to ears, all of them moving with the same rehearsed efficiency that felt almost choreographed. Tessa could feel the weight of their collective denial, the edges of their facade brushing against her every time someone averted their gaze.
Beside her, Callum stood like an anchor, his presence a quiet reassurance. He didn’t touch her, a deliberate choice that spoke volumes in the charged atmosphere. It was a small act of restraint, but it allowed Tessa to feel the space between them, to wrestle with the unspoken tension that pulsed in the air.
“They enter an antagonist-controlled space and find a prepared trap,” Tessa murmured, her voice barely rising above the hum of frantic activity around them.
“Then we make them show us where it leads,” Callum replied, his tone steady, the slight crease in his brow betraying his concern.
They had pieced together the details that others had overlooked: a time stamp that didn’t align, an access card found in the wrong hands, and a line in a chart written in a different handwriting. Arthur had warned Tessa that the truth would never come as a confession; it would instead emerge as something ordinary, masked by the mundane. The thought echoed in her mind as they moved swiftly through the room, the fluorescent lights flickering above, casting sharp shadows on the sterile walls.
When the next door swung open, the sudden rush of cool air sent a shiver down Tessa’s spine. Inside, the sterile scent of antiseptic was overpowering, mingled with something darker—something that hinted at betrayal. Her heart raced as they crossed the threshold, the stakes becoming painfully clear. The proof they sought could save them, but it held the power to drag their loved ones into the line of fire.
Callum’s gaze met hers, and she saw the understanding there, the unspoken agreement. He knew what this could mean. His hand found the small of her back, warmth radiating through the fabric of her shirt. For a moment, Tessa leaned into his touch, drawing strength from his proximity before he withdrew, allowing her the chance to lead.
“Tell me what you need,” he urged, his voice low yet firm, cutting through the noise of their surroundings.
Tessa hesitated. For the first time since everything had unraveled, she didn’t have a plan. She looked at him, really looked, and saw the strength he was willing to give up. It was a choice she felt deep in her gut. Instead of formulating a strategy, she made the only honest decision: to keep moving forward with him.
As they approached the desk in the corner, the drawer caught her eye, slightly ajar, as if inviting them to uncover its secrets. Tessa’s pulse quickened. She reached for the handle, her breath hitching in her throat as she pulled it open. Inside lay a series of documents, meticulously organized, but one stood out—an envelope marked with her name, scrawled in a hurried hand.
“This… this was meant for me,” she whispered, the implications crashing over her like a wave. The trap hadn’t just been set for anyone; it had been tailored for her specifically.
Callum leaned closer, his breath warm against her ear. “What does it say?”
With trembling fingers, Tessa extracted the envelope, her heart racing as she tore it open. The contents spilled forth—files, photographs, and a single sheet of paper. Her eyes skimmed over the words, each line sending a chill down her spine. It detailed everything, from her research notes to her personal connections, outlining a plan that twisted her insides with fear.
“This is… this is everything,” she stammered, her voice shaking. “They’ve been watching me.”
Callum’s expression darkened. “We need to get out of here, now.”
“No.” Tessa shook her head fiercely. “We can’t just leave. We have to understand who’s behind this.”
As she spoke, the reality of their situation settled heavily on her shoulders. The walls felt as though they were closing in, the weight of the evidence pulling them both into a chilling awareness. She glanced toward the door, the sterile hallway beyond, and then back to Callum. “We can’t let them control our next move.”
He nodded, his jaw set with determination. “Then let’s figure this out together. But we need to be careful.”
Just as they began to strategize, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed through the corridor, sharp and insistent. Tessa’s heart raced anew. Someone was coming. She exchanged a quick glance with Callum, the unspoken urgency between them palpable.
“Now,” he urged, stepping back, ready to lead her away from the potential danger.
But Tessa couldn’t move. The weight of the documents burned in her hands, the truth heavy with implications. They were on the brink of something monumental, yet the very air hummed with uncertainty. And just as they turned to escape, the door swung open with a bang, revealing a figure silhouetted against the harsh hallway lights.
