Chapter 10

The Name Behind the Name

Nora had learned that a crisis became most dangerous when everyone thought they understood it. In the cavernous cathedral that loomed over the Ashcroft hotel, a sense of urgency crackled through the air like static. People hurried past, their clipboards clutched tightly, phones glued to their ears, each carrying a piece of the same lie. The official story had coalesced too quickly, wrapping around them like a shroud. Nora could feel its weight, pressing down every time someone deflected a direct question with a practiced smile or a vague nod.

Julian stood beside her, close enough that their shoulders brushed, yet he refrained from touching her—a deliberate restraint that only heightened the tension between them. Nora appreciated the space; it was a reminder that she still had some semblance of control in this chaos.

“Midpoint: the apparent culprit is exposed as a pawn; the real conspiracy is larger,” she murmured, her voice low, almost drowned out by the din of anxious chatter.

Julian’s gaze hardened. “Then we make them show us where it leads.”

They moved away from the rest of the crowd, drawn to the overlooked details everyone else had dismissed: a time stamp on a log they’d found, an access card retrieved from the wrong pocket, a discrepancy in a financial chart that made no sense. Ivy had warned Nora that the truth wouldn’t come as a confession; it would emerge as something ordinary that someone had tried too hard to normalize.

As the heavy oak door to the adjacent room creaked open, revealing a flickering light, Nora's stomach twisted. The proof they needed could save them, but it also risked dragging their loved ones into the same line of fire. Julian caught her eye, the unspoken understanding between them palpable. He placed his hand at the small of her back, his warmth seeping through the fabric of her blouse, and then he froze, waiting.

“Tell me what you need,” he said, his voice steady, but Nora could sense the tension threading through his words.

For the first time since the disaster had struck, Nora hesitated. She met his gaze, searching for the control he was offering her, and made the only honest choice available: to keep moving forward with him.

“The name at the bottom of the ledger belongs to someone sitting in the next room,” she said, her voice barely a whisper.

Julian's brow furrowed, his mind racing. “We can’t just walk in there. They’re expecting us to play along with their narrative.”

Nora nodded, the urgency coiling tighter in her chest. “But if we don’t act now, we’ll lose our chance. We need to confront them before they seal this up as a closed case.”

“Then we do it together,” Julian replied, his voice low but firm. He stepped back, allowing her to take the lead, but the way his eyes lingered on her spoke volumes—he was ready to follow her anywhere.

As they approached the door, Nora's heartbeat quickened. The light spilled into the hallway, illuminating the dust motes swirling in the air. She could hear muffled voices inside, the undertones of anxiety and anger rising and falling like the tides. Julian fell into step beside her, their shoulders brushing again, a silent promise that they were in this together.

“On three,” she whispered, her pulse racing. “One… two…”

Before she could count to three, she pushed the door open with a resolute shove, stepping into the room. The atmosphere shifted instantly, the tension palpable. Several faces turned toward them, surprise mingling with irritation.

“Nora! Julian!” The voice belonged to Greg, the hotel manager, his eyes wide with disbelief. “What are you doing here?”

“We need to talk,” Nora said, her voice cutting through the haze of confusion. “About the ledger and what it means.”

The room fell silent, the air thick with unspoken tension. She could feel the weight of their scrutiny, each pair of eyes assessing her, Julian, and the implications of their intrusion.

Greg exchanged glances with the others, his expression wavering between anger and fear. “You shouldn’t be here. This is a private meeting.”

“Private or not, we have information that changes everything,” Julian interjected, stepping forward, his presence steady. “We know who’s been pulling the strings.”

Nora's heart raced as she registered the flicker of recognition in Greg's eyes. “You’re endangering everything,” he warned, his voice low and urgent.

“Or saving it,” Nora countered, her resolve hardening. “But we need you to listen.”

Suddenly, the door swung open again, and a tall figure stepped in. The shock of recognition hit Nora like a punch to the gut; it was someone she’d never expected to see in this context, someone who could change everything yet again.

“Can I help you?” the newcomer asked, a smile that didn’t reach her eyes plastered across her face.

Nora’s breath caught in her throat, the realization dawning. This was the moment they had feared, the tipping point. The stakes had just escalated, and there was no turning back.
