Chapter 13
The Kiss Interrupted
Nora stood in the cathedral’s shadow, her heart racing as the energy in the Ashcroft hotel boardroom crackled with tension. People bustled about, clutching clipboards and phones, the kind of frantic activity that masked more than it revealed. She could feel the weight of their expectations pressing down, the official story settling like a thick fog. It was a crisis, but one everyone pretended to understand, and that was where it became truly dangerous.
“An almost-kiss interrupted by a direct threat,” she murmured to Julian, keeping her voice low enough to avoid drawing attention.
“Then we make them show us where it leads,” he replied, his eyes scanning the room with sharp focus.
Nora felt the invisible line between them, a tension that both thrilled and terrified her. Julian stood close, just shy of touching her, his presence both a comfort and a reminder of the stakes at play. She appreciated that restraint; it gave her the power to decide how close they truly were.
They had stumbled onto something that others had overlooked—a timestamp on an email, a misplaced access card, a line in a financial report that didn’t match the author’s usual style. Ivy had warned Nora that the truth wouldn’t come easily; it would emerge as something someone had tried too hard to bury beneath the surface of normalcy.
A door creaked open across the room, and Nora’s breath hitched. There it was—the cost of being right. The evidence they needed could save them, but it also had the potential to drag the people they loved into the crossfire. Julian must have sensed her hesitation. His hand found the small of her back, warm and reassuring, before he held it there, waiting.
“Tell me what you need,” he said, his voice steady despite the chaos around them.
For the first time since everything had spiraled out of control, Nora found herself unable to devise a plan. She searched his face, noting the way he was willing to relinquish control, ready to follow her lead. It was a stark choice: to stay and fight or to keep moving forward, together.
“Just… trust me,” she finally replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
He nodded, and they shared a moment of understanding, the air thick with unspoken words and unresolved tension. Nora felt empowered, yet the weight of the moment pressed heavily on her chest. They had to act quickly before someone else pieced together what they were investigating.
As they began to inch toward the door, a sharp knock echoed three times, followed by the sound of a bolt being drawn. Nora's stomach dropped. She looked at Julian, who stiffened beside her, his eyes narrowing.
“Stay behind me,” he instructed, his voice low and firm.
Nora nodded, heart pounding as she squeezed past him, positioning herself just out of sight. The door swung open, revealing a uniformed security officer. The man scanned the room, eyes darting suspiciously, and Nora held her breath, hoping they wouldn’t be recognized.
“Everything alright in here?” the officer asked, his gaze lingering on Julian.
“Just reviewing some documents,” Julian replied smoothly, stepping forward as if to block the officer’s view. “Can we help you with something?”
The officer frowned, clearly unconvinced. “Just doing my rounds. You know how it is—gotta keep everything secure.” He took a step inside the room, and Nora felt a surge of panic.
“Actually, we’re fine here,” Nora interjected, forcing a calmness into her voice. “Just a few last-minute details to sort out.”
His eyes flicked to her, assessing. “You should be careful. There’s been some chatter about… incidents,” he said, lowering his voice. “Just keep an eye out.”
“Thanks for the warning,” Julian said, his tone even. “We appreciate it.”
The officer lingered a moment longer, then nodded, his expression softening just a fraction before he turned and left, closing the door behind him.
Nora exhaled, her heart racing. “That was too close,” she whispered, glancing at Julian.
He looked back at her, the tension in his jaw easing slightly. “We can’t afford to get caught,” he said, voice tight. “But we need to find that proof before it’s too late.”
Nora swallowed hard, the weight of their mission settling heavily on her shoulders. “Let’s move. We can’t let this opportunity slip away.”
As they stepped out into the dimly lit hallway, Nora’s mind raced with possibilities. They were closer to the truth, but the danger loomed larger than ever. She could feel it in her bones, the sense that they were being watched.
And then, a shadow flickered at the end of the hall, just out of reach. Nora’s heart sank. “Julian,” she hissed, grabbing his arm. “We’re not alone.”
The echo of footsteps sounded behind them, quickening the pace of her heart. They had to run, but the question was: would they make it out before the truth caught up to them?
