Chapter 15
The Evidence on Display
Nora stood at the edge of the cathedral's cavernous hall, the high ceilings echoing the muted sounds of chaos. The air was thick with tension as people rushed past, clipboards clutched tightly, phones buzzing with urgent messages. It felt surreal, like being in the eye of a storm where everyone around her believed they had the situation under control. Yet, beneath the surface, Nora sensed the cracks forming, the uncertainty lurking just out of sight. Every time someone skirted a direct question, the weight of the official story pressed down harder on her.
Julian stood beside her, his presence a steady anchor in the tumult. He didn’t reach out, allowing the air between them to hum with unspoken words. The space felt charged, the kind of tension that both comforted and unsettled Nora. She was grateful for the distance, yet it made her acutely aware of the choice she had to make.
"The couple stages a public reversal using evidence; it appears to work," she murmured, her voice barely rising above the din.
Julian’s gaze was sharp, focused. "Then we make them show us where it leads."
They had been combing through the details that everyone else seemed to overlook: a time stamp that didn’t fit, an access card that had been misplaced, and a line in a financial chart that contradicted the person who had authored it. Ivy had warned her that the truth wouldn’t come easily, that it would manifest as something ordinary, something that had been forced into the mold of normalcy. Nora could feel that truth inching closer, but the danger it carried loomed larger.
As the door to the boardroom swung open, Nora felt her heart quicken. Suddenly, the stakes were no longer abstract. The proof they were so close to uncovering could either save them or ensnare everyone they held dear. Julian must have sensed her hesitation. His hand found the small of her back, warm and reassuring, but he kept it still, a silent invitation for her to lead.
"Tell me what you need," he said, his voice low and steady, devoid of pressure.
Nora hesitated, staring into his eyes that held a mix of determination and vulnerability. For the first time since this nightmare began, she didn’t have a strategic plan to offer. Instead, she saw the control he was relinquishing, the trust he was placing in her. It was a choice—a leap into the unknown together.
Taking a breath, she nodded, feeling the weight of his hand grounding her. They moved forward, weaving through the crowd, the applause of the attendees fading into an indistinguishable hum. The atmosphere felt electric, the gravity of their mission overshadowing the trivial concerns of those around them.
As they approached the large screen at the front of the room, a wave of unease washed over Nora. The proof was right there, hovering just out of reach, but her instincts screamed that it wouldn’t stay visible for long. She scanned the room, spotting a few familiar faces among the crowd—people she cared for, people who could easily become collateral damage in this unfolding drama.
"Julian, we’re running out of time," she said urgently, her voice tight. "If we don’t act now—"
Before she could finish, a flicker on the screen caught her eye. The documents they needed, the evidence they’d worked so hard to piece together, was suddenly vanishing. Panic surged through her, and she instinctively grabbed Julian’s arm.
“Look!” she exclaimed, pointing at the screen as the last of the files blinked out of existence.
Julian’s expression hardened, determination igniting in his gaze. “We need to find out who’s behind this.”
Nora nodded, her pulse racing. “We have to get to the server room. We can still retrieve the data.”
“Then let’s move,” he said, his voice resolute. They turned to make their way through the thinning crowd, but just as they reached the door, a loud crash echoed from the hallway outside.
Nora’s heart plummeted. "What was that?"
Julian’s grip tightened around her wrist as he pulled her back instinctively. “Stay close,” he warned, his eyes scanning the corridor.
As the applause in the room gave way to murmurs of confusion, Nora felt a knot of dread tighten in her stomach. Whatever was happening outside, it was about to change everything.
With her heart racing and Julian’s presence anchoring her, she took a deep breath and stepped through the door, ready to face whatever lay ahead. The stakes had never been higher, and the danger was no longer just an abstract concept but a living, breathing threat.
