The Wedding Clause

Ch. 3 - Hidden Motives

Chapter 3

Hidden Motives

The reception pulsed with laughter and animated conversations, but all Nora could feel was the tightening knot of anxiety in her stomach. She tugged Julian's arm, leading him away from the crowded ballroom, the sound of clinking glasses and cheerful chatter fading into the background.

“We need to find out why Ivy ran,” she said, urgency lacing her voice. “If she left on her own, our family could be in serious danger. She wouldn’t have taken off without a good reason.”

Julian's jaw tightened, his face set with determination. “I agree. But we need more than just her word. Let’s check her room at the hotel. There might be something she left behind that can help us.”

They navigated through the hotel’s opulent corridors, the scent of fresh flowers mixed with lingering traces of perfume filling the air. Nora's heart raced as they approached Ivy’s suite, the door slightly ajar, as if it were inviting them into a world of secrets.

Inside, the remnants of a wedding celebration lay scattered around the room, vibrant flowers in crystal vases, a half-open bottle of champagne, and confetti strewn across the plush carpet, glimmering in the sunlight streaming through the curtains.

Nora stepped inside, her breath catching at the sight. “Look for anything unusual, any signs that she might have been threatened,” she urged, her eyes darting around the space.

Julian moved to the desk, his fingers brushing against an elegant silk dress draped over a chair. Then he froze, his expression shifting from mild curiosity to alarm. “Nora, over here.”

He gestured toward Ivy’s laptop, its screen still illuminated. Nora's pulse quickened as she approached, the weight of something significant pressing down on her. She tapped the keyboard, and the screen flickered to life. A folder labeled “IMPORTANT” caught her eye, its bold letters standing out among the disarray of files.

With a few clicks, they opened the folder. Inside were a series of emails, some marked urgent, others riddled with anxiety. Nora's gaze landed on one conversation that made her blood run cold,a discussion about a forged debt agreement involving their mother. “This can't be right,” she murmured, scrolling through the correspondence.

The name Celia Ashcroft loomed large in the threads, suggesting she had orchestrated something deeply sinister. “She had access to everything,” Julian said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Ivy must have stumbled onto something she shouldn’t have.”

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed ominously in the hallway, sending a spike of adrenaline coursing through Nora. “We need to go,” she hissed, quickly shutting the laptop and shoving it into her bag. But as they turned to leave, the door swung open, revealing Mateo, his expression unreadable yet somehow knowing.

“What are you two doing in here?” he asked, his voice steady but edged with challenge. The air thickened with tension, and Nora felt her heart hammering against her ribcage. They stood at a precipice, caught between maintaining their cover and the overwhelming need to confront the truth.

Nora’s mind raced as the gravity of their situation settled in. Mateo’s presence was a reminder that they were ensnared in a web of deception. Each second felt like an eternity, and every choice now felt like a step deeper into danger.

“Uh, we were just checking on Ivy,” Julian replied, a hint of bravado in his tone. “You know how weddings can be. A lot of stress.”

Mateo raised an eyebrow, skepticism etched across his face. “Right. Just make sure you’re not snooping where you shouldn’t be.” His gaze flicked to the laptop bag slung over Nora's shoulder, and she felt a wave of heat wash over her.

“Of course not,” she said, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside. “We’re just concerned about her. She’s been acting strange.”

“Strange how?” Mateo leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, his posture radiating a calm that belied the tension spiraling within Nora.

“Nothing specific. Just… you know, the usual wedding jitters,” Julian interjected, his voice smooth, but Nora could sense the underlying tension coiling between them.

Mateo studied them for a moment longer, suspicion flickering in his eyes. Then, he shrugged. “Just keep your heads down. You don’t want to attract attention.” He stepped back, allowing them to pass, but Nora felt the weight of his gaze on her as they slipped past him into the hallway.

Once outside, Julian exhaled sharply. “That was close. We need to figure out what Ivy knows and fast.”

Nora nodded, her mind racing with the implications of what they had discovered. “If Celia’s involved, things are more dangerous than we thought.”

As they turned to head down the corridor, Nora's stomach tightened with dread. They were caught in a storm, and every decision they made could either lead them to safety or pull them deeper into the darkness. But one thing was certain: they had to uncover the truth before it was too late.

Nora read Ivy's message three times. Julian watched her without asking for the phone.

"She thinks you knew about the debt," Nora said.

"I knew my aunt was pressuring her. I did not know the document had your name."

"That distinction will not help when the board votes."

They reached the villa before dawn. The front door stood open, and a wedding planner's emergency kit waited on the hall table. Inside was a copy of the forged agreement, a hotel key, and a note addressed to Nora.

Your sister did not run. She was dismissed.

Julian searched the security feed while Nora checked the rooms. The camera outside the bridal suite showed Ivy leaving with Celia's assistant. The assistant carried the same white garment bag Ivy had used for her dress.

"She was taken somewhere in the hotel system," Nora said.

Julian's phone rang. Celia told him the board would cancel the trust by noon unless he presented a legally valid wife. She offered Nora a settlement in exchange for a confession that the debt was real.

"She is trying to buy my silence," Nora said.

"She is trying to buy your ruin cheaply."

Nora placed the forged agreement on the table. "We need a witness who saw the original."

Julian looked at the signature line. "Mateo. He delivered the trust papers."

They found Mateo in the hotel kitchen, hiding from reporters. He admitted he had seen the original clause without Nora's name, then watched Celia replace it before the ceremony.

"Will you testify?" Nora asked.

"If you protect my staff from retaliation."

Julian signed a protection order using his hotel authority. Nora added her own name beneath his, making the promise public and irreversible.

The board meeting began on the lobby screens. Celia announced that Nora had forged the debt. Nora stepped into the camera frame with Mateo beside her and Julian at her shoulder.

"You wanted a wife," Nora said. "What you are getting is a witness."

Behind the cameras, Ivy's phone rang from inside the locked bridal suite.

Nora ran first. Julian followed with Mateo and the protection order. The suite door had been sealed from outside, but Nora knew the emergency release hidden beneath the floral panel.

Inside, the room was empty except for Ivy's phone and a second copy of the debt agreement. The copy contained a clause saying Nora would be charged if she testified.

"They are holding her through me," Nora said.

Julian picked up the phone. A location pin blinked over the service garage.

"Then we stop negotiating," he said.

Nora folded the clause into her planner. "No. We make them believe we are still negotiating."

They walked toward the garage with Mateo recording every step. The elevator opened onto a running car and a frightened bride.
