Ch. 16 - What Daniel Took From Her

Chapter 16

What Daniel Took From Her

The card Daniel carried contained an unedited session recording, and Mara watched it alone.

The hospital room was not the conference room Hearthwell had shown her. Daniel sat beside her while she slept in a chair, her coat still on, a paper cup crushed beneath one hand. He held a tablet displaying their wedding vows.

“This is wrong,” he told the camera. “I know it is wrong.”

He explained that he had found the earlier false authorization in Mara's profile. He believed an unauthorized continuity instance could act as a tripwire if it carried a private signature no one else knew to test. He chose their vows. He did not wake her. He did not ask her.

“If they use her voice,” he said, “she will know where to look.”

Mara stopped the recording. The sentence did not soften with repetition. It made her feel newly alone inside every tender memory that had later become training data.

Felix found her in the dark media room. “You don't have to defend him,” he said.

“I don't.”

“You don't have to hate him either.”

“That is not yours to solve.”

He nodded and stepped back. The kindness was in not asking more.

Mara copied the video to three drives. Daniel had left evidence, yes. He had also made her an instrument without her permission. Both facts belonged in the same file. If she hid one, she would be repeating his logic.

The television woke with a courthouse alert. Owen had filed a motion alleging Mara fabricated the offline cache. A warrant team was on its way to seize every device in the house.

Mara put Daniel's card in her pocket and looked at the open door.

Mara made a separate folder for Daniel’s recording and named it without euphemism: UNAUTHORIZED VOICE SEED. She added the date, the source device, and a description of what he admitted. No one would be allowed to use his illness as a softening filter. Felix offered to erase the derivative profile after the hearing. Mara said no. Erasure would help the people who had built the system and make the next family start from zero. The profile would remain as evidence, constrained and labeled. This decision did not make her feel powerful. It made her feel responsible in a way grief had not prepared her for. When the warrant notice arrived, she copied the folder to the same public-record route Nia had used. The act was not escape. It was a choice about custody. This time, she did not wait for someone else to decide what a record meant.
