Chapter 8
The Man in the Index
The editor ID hidden in the altered frames belonged to Felix Ward.
Mara found it in a raw export, beneath seven layers of normalizing code. FW-17 appeared beside the substitute-frame command, then again beside a deletion request Daniel had filed. Felix read the screen from across the room and did not attempt a lie.
“I built the rollback tool,” he said. “At Hearthwell. It was supposed to restore an original when a family challenged an edit.”
“Did it?”
“Not if the original was marked redundant.”
He explained in pieces. The program did not erase tapes; it downgraded their priority, then offered a polished export as the “best available family version.” Most clients accepted it. A few did not. When Daniel began collecting discrepancy reports, Felix had been told to purge the audit trail.
“I did one overwrite,” he said. “A woman in Spokane. Her son's deposition was replaced with a grief-summary clip. The estate closed before she could prove it.”
Mara wanted to ask why he had come to her house. Instead she asked, “What did Daniel have on you?”
“Nothing. He offered me a chance to fix it.”
The rollback tool still existed, offline, in Felix's backpack. They ran it against Daniel's death-night files. The screen flickered through corrupted frames, then found a thirty-second slice from a hospital service corridor. Daniel walked past the camera alive, wearing the blue cardigan from his final recording.
The timestamp read two days after his official death.
Felix whispered, “That can't be right.”
Mara studied the fluorescent hum in the audio, the lens distortion at the edge, the clock reflection in the fire door. The clip was real. The implication was not yet clear.
At the end, Daniel looked directly toward the camera and held up a storage card.
Felix showed Mara the rollback code on paper, not a screen. He wanted her to see that it was built around permissions: who could see an original, who could call an export authoritative, who could make a failed restoration disappear. “The code did what management asked,” he said. Mara read the comments in the margin and saw places where he had written warnings that someone later deleted. His guilt was not proof of his current loyalty. It was proof that he understood what the system could hide. She made him sign a dated statement describing the Spokane overwrite and the death-night recovery. He did, without bargaining. When the corridor clip ended, Mara copied its sensor noise to two drives. The image of Daniel alive might be a displaced timestamp. The camera’s noise could tell her whether the room itself had been moved. She would not let hope choose the answer. Felix showed Mara the rollback code on paper, not a screen. Then someone off-screen called his name.
