Chapter 101
The Unlocked Index
The court’s correction letter arrived at dawn, stamped with no official signature and a narrow red line under the title.
Elise opened it with wet hands.
Owner identity request granted for review under witness integrity statute.
Manual override records to be disclosed.
No final hearing closure until chain is reconstructed.
She read it twice and then passed it to Bell and Priya.
Mara arrived in the doorway with two coffees and the same expression she had worn since chapter ninety: calm in public, fractured inside.
"This is the first real move," Priya said.
Elise nodded. "No victory, but a live lane."
Bell pulled out his map. "If we get owner identity, we can force the final amendment."
"Or open a deeper trap," Mara said.
The correction line meant one thing now: there would be one more hearing, but this time with live owner review. The name in the file changed every time someone handled it. Sometimes it appeared as A. Voss, sometimes as S. Hart, sometimes as Owner Alias.
They decided to split. Bell kept the legal route. Priya and Mara went to the old contractor archives with the hearing copy. Elise stayed back to prepare a direct statement from the room chronology.
At midday she stood at the corridor bench and wrote:
Chain gap is not only a missing timestamp. It is a missing owner voice.
The hearing office called in the evening.
She was to submit three physical copies of the new evidence bundle by 11:17.
When she asked why 11:17 again, the clerk said, "That is the time this route first appears."
Elise smiled without joy. "Then it appears until someone closes it."
Priya returned with an archived ledger showing contractor signatures, one missing line, and one digital hash that never matched original export logs.
"We found a maintenance vendor who cannot explain the last override," Priya said.
Mara added, "The override had no matching key card but still changed queue flags."
Elise wrote three names underlined: identity, queue, fallback.
At night, she called Helen, asking if the next hearing could be held in a transparent room.
"You ask for too much transparency," Helen said.
"Then give me enough to prevent vanishing again."
Before sleep, the city lights dimmed unexpectedly for eight seconds. Elise ignored it and went to bed with the unlocked index beside her.
For the first time in weeks, the house was still.
