Ch. 103 - The Empty Bench

Chapter 103

The Empty Bench

Elise came home to an empty bench outside her building.

It had been there yesterday, but now someone had pulled it out into the rain and left one folded note on the seat.

Not all hearings need a room.
Some need a witness path.

Mara saw it first and stood very still.

"If this is intimidation, it's polite intimidation," she said.

Priya scanned the wood grain and found one old impression near the edge.

Bench moved from annex line.
She said no one else needed to be there.

Bell kept checking his watch for noon when the supplemental hearing date was likely to start.

At the hearing hall, the panel asked for direct owner identity evidence.

Elise submitted the contractor sheet and the smudged access line.

"Can you prove the alias belongs to a living account?" the clerk asked.

Priya said, "Not yet. But we can prove one account was used without a living identity."

Bell added, "At that point the process cannot claim consent."

The panel paused and requested one independent attestation.

Mara said she'd bring one from a records clerk who had worked one of the old shifts.

By late evening they had her statement: no direct signature, only queue assignment under temporary operator.

Elise listened to the statement and felt a cold steadiness.

No face kept appearing in every record where a face should have been.

The unknown source sent one line:

**Empty bench means room cleared itself for witnesses to speak.

Bell said, "That’s not warning."

Priya said, "Maybe it means they’re done with stagecraft."

Elise wrote the night log with one clean line:

No body in court, no room for denial.

She slept with the folded bench note under her pillow, untouched.
