Chapter 128
The Unauthorized Recording
The next morning, Elise woke to an SMS from an unknown number.
If you hear one recording, there may be six. If you hear six, ask who owns the room you are in.
She read it twice, then burned the message into a printout and put it next to the kettle.
Mara’s original contract had an owner section that every tenant signed, yet no one in the company knew who authorized retention.
Bell visited the building management office with a legal letter and found one intern who recognized her from the hearing.
"I only know the admin password changed yesterday," he said. "After midnight. By a user marked R."
Priya hacked the archive database.
The new file list showed one row with no title:
r_unauth_128.wav
Elise clicked.
The playback began with background air, then a woman’s whisper: "If this is still being played, we are already late."
Pause.
Then a door slam and footsteps in descending rhythm.
Elise looked up from headphones.
"We need a second room this time," she said.
Bell checked the map and pointed.
"If the sound changed on upload, the upload point is in a second room."
They compared the waveform with earlier clips. Three short spikes sat where no speech should be.
Priya said those spikes matched elevator movement in Stairwell C.
Elise wrote:
r_unauth_128
Door chain with no room number.
Upload path unknown.
In the afternoon, Bell entered a maintenance room she had never been to.
There was a box of old batteries, an old router, and a signed consent form in Mara’s handwriting.
Not to him.
To "The Wife."
Mara had never written that phrase.
Elise put the form under a lamp and called Priya.
On the other end, Priya said nothing, only breathing.
"We just got one step closer," she finally said.
Elise did not answer.
