The Wife Who Gave Everything

Ch. 131 - The Service Lift Signal

Chapter 131

The Service Lift Signal

The service lift answered only to two cards. Bell had one, the inspector had one, and someone had borrowed a third at least once.

Priya mapped the access events and printed a clean line:

07:12 – Card used at B-floor 07:12 – Card failed 07:12 – Card used in maintenance mode

Elise looked up at the door. "The lift admits two truths and calls one lie."

They rode at dawn to B-floor where cameras had been disabled.

No footage.

Only a maintenance tablet, still logged in.

Inside the log, Elise found a single unsent message draft:

If you need the original, check the service lift logs before noon, before the legal clerk arrives.

No-name had signed it.

Priya typed the draft into a temporary folder and exported the metadata.

In the service lift wall there were fingerprints on a tape mark, layered in three colors.

The oldest was a pale green, the freshest a gray-blue.

Bell said someone had cleaned the tape with spirit, then replaced it.

Elise called the hearing assistant.

"Can you confirm who was physically in the lift at 07:12?"

The assistant laughed.

"No one uses that lift at that hour."

"Exactly," Elise said.

At noon, they returned and found a hand-drawn route tucked behind the lift panel.

It connected B-floor to a door labeled "Archive Annex."

At the bottom:

Do not enter in voice mode.

Elise stood there for a long time with the folded sheet.

Mara would have hated that sentence if it were true.

Bell smiled, eyes tired.

"That means someone needed voices muted. Why would they do that?"

Elise answered without looking up:

"So nobody could identify who called for a witness."
