Chapter 135
The Courtroom Shadow
The courtroom clerk arrived with a coffee and two folders.
One was legal, one personal.
Priya opened the legal folder first: a fresh redaction order with a page marker where section 5 had been replaced by a block of gray.
"Someone blanked the section before filing," Bell said.
The personal folder contained only one photograph.
In it, Elise stood behind a glass wall while Mara sat outside on the other side, face turned away.
"Look at the door reflection," Priya said. "There is a second shadow behind her."
Elise zoomed.
Behind Mara’s left shoulder stood a tall figure wearing gloves, no face.
She had seen that figure in hallway cameras and in a recording only once.
The judge asked how she knew.
"The same shape appears where every legal gap begins."
In the official transcript, chapter markers were in perfect order except one missing line:
The wife leaves a trace.
Elise pointed.
Bell read aloud from the court-provided index:
Deleted for irrelevant process.
Elise laughed sharply.
"Irrelevant is what they label the truth."
The hearing resumed at 14:00. Priya played the personal photo on a shared screen.
The prosecution denied its admission.
Elise presented metadata proving the building server had delivered the image by queue, not by human upload.
"This is not a camera image," Elise said. "This is a queue image."
No one challenged.
At recess, the figure from the photograph appeared once in the corridor outside room 3.
No face.
The reflection in the glass was enough.
When Elise came back, the clerk slid a sticky note under her folder:
If your shadow appears, stay still until the lights reset.
Elise stared at the words.
Bell said, "Someone inside court is feeding you those exact lines."
Elise returned to her seat and wrote:
Shadow did not enter. Process invited it in.
