The Witness in Waiting
The hearing assistant had never seen Elise that calm.
She arrived with three folders, two pens, and a folded corridor tape.
"We're not asking for a witness," the assistant said. "You're asking for process."
Elise placed the tape on the table.
"We're asking for the missing witness that process created."
Priya checked the timestamp from corridor tape: 04:12.
"That is before anyone entered legal custody," she said.
Bell read from the logs.
Witness event opened, status waiting, no assigned person.
Three minute auto-fill.
Auto-fill failed.
The clerk frowned.
"Auto-fill failed never happens."
Elise held up a printed excerpt from previous files.
Witness in waiting appeared every time the system had to maintain continuity without an actual person.
The prosecutor asked why they believed that phrase mattered.
Bell answered first:
"Because in this case, every missing person was replaced with process."
Elise then played the corridor tape.
It contained only one phrase:
If no one comes forward, we are all in waiting rooms.
Outside in the corridor she saw the door to a side room and a person waiting without moving, hand on a phone, eyes on the floor.
The person never answered when she called their name.
Priya got a photo from court security and sent it to her.
Face not visible.
Elise laughed softly.
"Even waiting is now anonymous."
She wrote to the court:
Order is not what stands up. Order is what is called while nobody stands.
At home, they confirmed the witness-in-waiting event had been triggered by one unseen manual override.
The next morning, they found the override user.
Not a person.
A service profile with no avatar and no password history.
