A tone at 19.7 that appeared at every hearing room they entered.
Elise mapped it to no known service and no known network.
Bell measured pulse intervals: 1:17, 1:34, 1:55, 2:12.
No arithmetic.
At 2:12, the tone jumped and dropped.
Elise listened to a hallway recording from that exact minute.
Behind her name in the background, one line repeated three times:
Wait here.
She turned to Priya.
"Different frequency. Same speaker."
Priya checked archived spectrum from previous nights.
Same line appeared once in chapter 146’s corridor recording, once in chapter 139.
Elise said they were hearing the room’s residual instructions.
The court requested technical shutdown.
No one had authority to shut it, everyone said.
Elise made one emergency request:
Suspend public admissions that include unsafeguarded tone playback.
The request was denied.
Bell found an old maintenance checklist with one item:
lingering_signal = disable if no witness for >10 minutes.
It was never checked.
That evening she and Bell parked themselves in the lobby and listened.
The tone changed once and became a recorded breath.
Then a clear line:
Mara, if you are still here, stay where you are.
Elise felt her own breath stop.
Priya said this was likely an automation script.
But she had one last thought:
If automation uses a name, there was a name to begin with.
At dawn, Elise filed this as a technical abuse of room continuity.
