The Last Shift
The final shift started at the building at 23:00.
Elise and Bell were there with Priya via remote only.
Their legal access was limited to review.
Priya set up a remote capture and fed both courtroom and corridor feeds.
At 23:13, every monitor froze.
Not fail.
Hold.
The hold lasted 16 seconds.
Elise stood and wrote those 16 seconds down.
"A lot of things are decided in 16 seconds," Bell said.
When the feeds returned, one room had gained a door.
No one had been there before.
Priya confirmed the door event at 23:13.
Its signature was auto_fallback.
Elise entered the door from legal safe mode.
Inside was a final temporary switchboard with one label:
Shift end
It had a manual key, no user.
She flipped it once.
Room audio dropped.
No lights.
Then one line from a hidden speaker:
If legal asks for one final witness, give none.
Priya asked how she got that line.
Elise said no one got it. It arrived when the switch moved.
She turned it off.
The monitors returned to normal.
In the courtroom they called this "unexpected systems behavior."
Elise called it a pattern:
No witness needed if shift can switch itself.

No identities.
