The Vanished Clerk

"I expected this." Helen lowered her voice. "If they erase the clerk, they erase the chain that took the third signature."

"Can the court keep a chain without clerk?" Bell asked.

"No. But they can call it administrative error."

Helen handed them two fresh blank statements.

"You are now the continuity parties."

Elise asked, "That's not a legal term."

"It's about to be."

Mara took one form and asked, "So what do we do now?"

Helen looked at the room S file and answered, "You get all three files to external counsel now."

Priya shook her head. "No outside counsel. We get traced."

Elise said, "Then use a dead drop."

Bell nodded and took out a metal case.

Inside, each of them wrote one short summary on a line card:

• Bell: chain interruption at hearing transfer.
• Priya: missing seventh to tenth transitions.
• Mara: witness card identity conflict.
• Elise: father file ambiguity and the room signatures.

The plan was to place each card inside a public library return shelf and let the counsel pick them up through trusted channels.

They split at 22:00.

Elise drove toward the old library where she had once studied architecture.

At shelf B-17, she found one card missing already.

She did not panic. She left the other and took the stairs two floors up.

At the reading room, an old volunteer stood at the desk and asked if she was looking for "Room Nine."

"No," she said.

"You are looking for a witness room," the volunteer said and slid a novel across the counter.

Inside the novel, a page was cut and behind it was a microfilm strip with one line:

The vanished clerk worked for two voices: law and Vellum.

Elise sent it to Bell.

Priya got her card from shelf E-2 and got a counter-note from an unknown hand:

Don't use public channels now.

Mara arrived with the third.

She said, "My card turned up in a train station cloakroom. Someone moved first."

Bell checked the time and said, "Then the room is already selecting us."

Elise and Priya returned to the annex and found the service tunnel door propped open by a metal strip.

"No one entered alone," Priya said. "Someone staged this for a team."

Elise touched the strip and closed it.

"Not tonight," she said.

Back at Bell’s place, they replayed all three microfilm strips.

One strip had one clean line in Simon’s voice:

If the clerk vanishes, the room still signs.

Mara said, "Then we need to make the room sign the truth."

Elise nodded and made tea with shaking hands.

The city outside was already quieter than any morning.

She wrote the first line in her witness log:

We are now witnesses to a clerkless chain.

And then, below it:

The only witness left is the room that cannot be erased.
