Ch. 41 - The Room in the Clocktower

Chapter 41

The Room in the Clocktower

Bell called from a location that was never in system records: "Clocktower access point."

"The legal office wants to meet at 4:10."

Mara asked, "Where exactly?"

Bell sent one image, a grainy photo of an old municipal clocktower converted into a legal annex during the flood upgrades.

Elise looked through the old map and saw a narrow stair tucked beneath the clock face.

By midnight they were at the tower.

The stairwell climbed in silence, each step covered with old carpet that had been replaced twice and still smelled like rain.

"No microphones on tower stair," Priya said, half-laughing.

In the tower room, Helen waited with the sealed hearing envelope.

"The review office changed location again," Helen said.

On the table lay three files and one legal form with no seal.

"Need final live statement from all four of you."

Mara said, "You can’t ask me to speak in this room."

Helen nodded. "I’m not asking. I’m giving a channel."

Elise read first:

I have no proof of June as individual, only proof of a procedure used to erase one witness continuity.

Priya spoke second:

I found missing signatures across annex, hearing, and room S, with at least one likely forged or reassigned entry.

Bell gave third:

I was aware of room access routes and failed to escalate when I should have.

Elise looked at him before deciding the final line: I will testify that the room with red light is not accessory but source.

The fourth signature did not happen at the table.

A technician stepped in and said the legal clerk’s name had been removed from system five minutes after their meeting started.

Helen closed the envelope. "We move at dawn."

Mara asked, "To what?"

"Public filing. No private hearing."

They descended before dawn as the city lights switched and one truck rolled along a lane they never used.

At the tower exit, Bell said, "If this leaks, we all become part of it."

Priya answered, "Better than being part of someone else’s file."

Elise found her own voice trembling and then hardened.

The first legal gate at city hall accepted one folder without looking at her name.

"Where did you get this many originals?" the clerk asked.

"From rooms," Elise said.

He stamped and said nothing.

At noon, Helen sent:

No public hearing now. They may still block until your route is known.

Mara read it and said, "We can force with evidence."

Elise wrote on the timeline:

Clocktower used as second legal site. Clerk removed immediately after arrival.

She looked at Bell.

"You said the thief was our route."

"Then we reroute."

Elise put the red marker through the map to mark one new path:

Clocktower -> public filing -> emergency channel -> witness shelter.

The building behind them clicked once in evening.

No one looked back.
