Chapter 43
Red Tag on the Door
The first thing Elise saw at Bell’s old stair house was a red tag on the side door.
Not danger. Just the old municipal tape used for service alerts.
She lifted it and found a single line of print: DO NOT REMOVE.
Mara stood behind her and said, "Don’t."
"Then what?"
"Wait."
Priya arrived with a mini recorder and said she’d seen the same tag at court annex three floors below.
Bell checked his keychain and did not enter the door.
"If the tag was theirs, this is a bait room."
Mara went inside anyway, slowly.
In the entryway was a stack of camera housings, each with one missing screw.
Priya held one up and frowned. "Lens bracket missing again."
Bell walked to the wall where two old wires crossed.
There was a small pinhole behind the screw line, as if someone had opened the wall for wiring and then forgot to reseal.
Elise put her glove on the frame and said, "This is where they routed around the camera."
Priya moved to the table and uncovered two folders under a cloth.
One folder was marked RED TAG. The other WITNESS HOLD.
The first had only route diagrams and one sentence:
A door labeled with red tape is not dangerous. It is a witness waiting for witness.
The second had one print from 3B with a split image.
In one frame, Bell stood in a hallway, hands open. In the other frame, no one and a red tag on the same door.
"He’s not the same Bell," Priya said.
Bell said, "Could be a test duplicate."
Elise felt sudden clarity: they had been used as timing markers.
"Who gave you the old clip?" Bell asked.
"No one that answers directly," Priya said.
Mara checked the timestamp and found the clip started at 11:17 with a repeated beep every seven seconds.
"A beacon."
"And the red tag is the beacon index."
Elise made three photocopies of the route and sent one to Helen.
Meanwhile, Bell called saying he’d found one old maintenance contract for a local security vendor.
The contract had one clause: no camera lens replacement without two signatures.
Elise checked the signatures list. One signature was hers.
She stood frozen.
"That can’t be," she said.
Mara replied, "Someone had your name with your name block."
Priya said, "Signatures can be forged by motion only."
Bell looked at Elise and did not ask permission. "I’m sorry," he said. "If this was forged, it was with a template from your old application."
Elise felt anger so clean it hurt.
She took the red-tag folder and opened to the last page:
When the door closes by itself, the room says: I have already moved.
At dusk they left with no more folders than they arrived with.
Only one copy in Elise’s coat now: the red tag sheet.
Outside, a police van rolled by and one officer watched with too much curiosity.
Mara said, "He’s the same one from city hall."
Bell said, "Then we become less visible."
Elise wrote in her notebook:
I refuse being the template.
