Ch. 47 - Last Breath at the Hallway

Chapter 47

Last Breath at the Hallway

The hallway had no air.

Everyone in the public corridor seemed to hold their breath as if the building itself was exhaling in a controlled interval.

Elise entered with a folded witness packet and two clean copies in her coat.

The hearing room had shifted to a plain municipal office with one camera in the corner and one desk.

"You’re late by one queue," the notary said.

Elise replied, "I got here the moment the room let me."

Mara put a hand on her arm and gave the old phrase: "Don’t name the room first."

Bell watched the door and said the same low phrase: "No signatures near cameras."

Priya connected an external recorder and ran the third signature note through.

The room tone was flat.

Then a phrase from the tape broke through:

Elise, if you are reading this, I am already a room.

The room seemed to still.

Bell said, "That line changes the case."

Priya read the rest. "...I made the room because I could not give you a courtroom name."

Elise sat down and pressed the pen to the table.

Notary asked, "Are you prepared to swear that the room had active control over witness designation?"

Elise thought of her father’s handwriting, her brother’s uncertainty, the child handprint, the missing signatures.

She said, "I am prepared to swear we were given a chain with forged continuity and withheld witness names."

The notary nodded and asked for Mara’s statement.

Mara read hers with no tears:

Room S was not a room. It was a witness mechanism. We entered because someone asked us to, and now we testify that mechanism without that person.

The notary looked unsettled.

"Can you provide the third witness?"

Bell looked to Priya.

Priya handed him the final packet from the tunnel shelf. He nodded and gave a direct line.

I cannot testify for you. I can testify against the process.

Notary wrote that down and stamped the paper.

Outside the corridor, a courier waited with two plain paper envelopes.

One was addressed to Helen. One to Elise's address with no sender.

Inside Elise’s envelope: one line of carbon paper.

If the hearing closes, call the room by its old code: 11:17 // S // 0.

Elise called Bell and gave the code into one breath.

At midnight they stood outside the courthouse.

Mara asked, "Now what?"

Elise said, "Now we stop treating it as hearing and start treating it as proof."

Priya checked their copies against the stamped page and said, "There are two signatures still missing, maybe not ours to chase now."

"Then we chase the room." Bell nodded.

Elise looked at the building one last time.

Last breath is not the end of the witness, she wrote in her notebook. It is the breath the room took while deciding whether to keep us.
