The Wife Who Gave Everything

Ch. 52 - Corridor Zero

Chapter 52

Corridor Zero

The emergency hearing date was six days away.

Elise used day one to build a corridor map no one in the group questioned: City Hall, annex stair, clocktower, station shelf, utility tunnel.

Bell asked, "Why map?"

"Because if we have to move in panic, we need a route that does not look like a route."

Priya prepared three clean hardcopies with different names and no metadata.

Mara said, "I hate changing names."

Elise said, "I hate pretending we can stay."

At the legal prep office, they practiced testimony in one breath each:

Mara—annex access and witness continuity.
Priya—timeline integrity and technical validation.
Bell—custodian and transfer points.
Elise—first witness response and chain impact.

Bell checked one line repeatedly: 11:17.

Priya said, "Keep it as is. It's your anchor."

The night before rehearsal, an envelope appeared on Bell’s car mirror.

Inside: one photograph of a corridor with no people and one phrase:
Corridor Zero is the route with no label.

Mara held it and said, "This is not a threat. It’s an offer."

Elise knew exactly why: when they call one room by name, they control it.

At dawn, Bell took them to a dry loading dock where old floorboards were still covered in contractor dust.

He said, "If there is a suppression attempt, we go here and split."

Priya laughed. "You prepared this script for weeks."

He nodded. "And for someone else too."

The hearing hearing rehearsal ran for four straight hours.

When they finished, one legal assistant said, "You’re not dramatic enough."

Priya answered, "Truth is dramatic enough."

Elise took the compliment as if it were a warning.

At 23:30 they received one text from the unknown male voice:

Stop rehearsing. Rooms don't rehearse.

Elise replied with only one word:

WE.

Her phone showed no reply.

Mara said, "Now you gave it back."

Elise answered, "No. I answered for all of us."

She slept with the corridor map under her hand.
