Ch. 57 - Corridor of Voices

Chapter 57

Corridor of Voices

Everyone expected one more hearing date.

Instead Bell called at 22:00 and said we should go to the corridor directly.

"No hall. No room. Corridor."

Elise met Priya and Mara at the old utility stair and carried two paper packets only.

The corridor had no lights and a faint hum like distant traffic.

At the far end, one monitor hummed on battery.

"The third-floor signal showed a route," Priya said. "This is that route."

Elise stepped in and saw one long table with three chairs, no windows.

Bell had brought a legal pad and a portable battery.

"One statement now or never."

She opened the first packet. A clean transcript:

Corridor 56-57 is where witness names are rewritten as place names.

"Could this be admissible?" she asked.

Mara said, "Only if we put it in front of a person who can hear multiple voices."

Priya played one low-level segment from WITNESS_HOLD_BACKUP.

For ten seconds there were three breathing rhythms.
Then one soft phrase.

I am not asking forgiveness.
I am asking for witness to stop being a format.

Elise felt breathless.

Bell said, "That is not Mara’s voice. Not mine."

Mara said, "Could be their composite room."

They left no room for debate and called Helen with the transcript.

Helen arrived two hours later with a legal emergency packet and one copy of the room map.

"If you bring this corridor transcript to court now, they can call it unauthenticated."

Priya said, "Then authenticate with witness in person."

So Elise read it once more into a recorder with one timestamp and her own declaration line.

I heard this in room 3B through the corridor monitor and cannot disprove direct capture at this time.

The recorder accepted it.

Bell wrote the statement with one heavy hand.

Mara copied the transcript into two versions and placed them in an envelope labeled Corridor of Voices.

Outside, a rain started and stopped at once.

Elise looked back once and saw one shadow from the far wall, no face, then nothing.

Helen said, "The court will schedule a private identity hearing in three days."

Bell asked, "Private means no crowd."

"Private means controlled."

Elise answered, "Then we make room for two kinds of control."

At home, she laid out all 57 chapters in her head as a sequence and found one pattern now obvious: every room had a second room behind it.

She wrote the closing line for this phase:

In corridor 57, voices stopped arguing. They started indexing.

Then she slept with one hand on the packets and one ear to the hum.
