The River Archive

The river archive was not a place; it was an old record room by a storm drain.

Elise hated the smell and loved the certainty: cold walls and no electricity.

"Here," Bell said, "the old municipal backups used to be dumped."

Mara said, "Then nobody has looked for anything in twenty years."

Priya carried two drives and a lamp.

They found one metal cabinet marked temporary witness, with two rusted locks.

Bell broke one lock quietly and opened the third layer.

Inside were cartridges with no labels and one thick file folder: C-VOID.

Elise opened the folder and found one page that explained a transfer model.

"What is blind witness?" Priya asked.

Bell replied, "A voice with no face."

Elise turned the page and found a list of names, one line smudged.

Mara's lips moved as if in prayer.

Priya lifted one cartridge and connected to a reader. The file came in with one old hiss and then clear room tone.

There was a child voice, then an adult whisper.

Elise felt immediate vertigo.

At the archive, the lamp dimmed and returned.

Priya said, "Interference."

Bell said, "Not interference. Someone is searching for us in the building."

Mara folded the route card and said, "Then we go fast."

They split the folder into three:

Elise watched Bell and Mara disappear into the corridor and then returned to the cabinet to copy a final photograph: a line in black marker.

If June is a person, they are hiding the face. If June is a code, they are hiding the voice.

Back in the studio, they scanned the cartridge metadata and found one unexpected tag.
