The Room of Names

Elise read the names: real people, real initials, and one last line: WITNESS UNFILED.

Mara pointed at the blank. "That's where June should be."

Priya said, "Not if June is a process."

Elise wrote it down exactly as seen and made one correction:

UNFILED — witness process unresolved.

The unknown female voice sent one line:

Name lists are where rooms hide.

No explanation.

In the late afternoon they met Helen to file the final legal supplement.

Helen said the panel had opened a side inquiry into maintenance protocol and had requested one witness from hearing maintenance.

Elise said, "Will that help?"

"Sometimes maintenance is where names disappear."

They met at the courthouse utility stairs where the old operator had once appeared.

No one there now.

But the station log still had one entry:

MILESTONE: ROOM LIST CLEANUP // no witness visible // unauthorized.

Bell read it and swallowed.

Priya photographed the log with timestamp.

Mara asked, "Could be old."

Priya said, "Could be planted."

Elise said, "It matches our route if not this week."

Back in the studio they drafted a one-page summary for publication and one for appeal:

Summary: chain mismatch, witness discontinuity, room list omission, no-face signatures.

Elise asked Bell to write one line from his conscience.

He did: I used process to delay truth.

Priya said, "That may become your liability."

Bell nodded. "Or the only thing that proves I was wrong on purpose."

At sunset they walked to the corridor where the old mirror once made faces appear twice.

Elise stood between two doors and read all six names aloud.

When she said the blank line aloud, the red light on a distant panel clicked once.

Mara stepped beside her. "That means one more message."

Elise said nothing.

She opened her phone and saw a recording from the unknown source:

The room of names is now public at 11:17.

Elise deleted nothing.

She saved it.

If a witness cannot be named, name the room. she wrote in her ledger.
