Chapter 72
Sealed Witness Room
The auditor asked for one final room visit.
Not the annex. The witness room itself, sealed as "structural correction."
Elise, Bell, Priya, and Mara entered with hardline gloves and no electronics.
Inside, the room had no red lights now.
One wall still carried a faint line from old masking tape.
Priya said, "Good. At least this one shows no visible edits."
Elise walked to the center and put down the operator ledger.
"No devices, no cameras," Bell said.
"I know." She said.
Mara looked at the wall panel and pressed where the red light had once sat.
It didn’t click.
Priya checked one corner with her lamp.
"No hidden seam."
Elise laughed once quietly. "Maybe this room has been finally emptied."
The auditor wasn’t there to help, only to witness.
She asked each of them one practical question:
"Who last entered this room when hearing queue had active flag?"
Elise said, "The unknown voice. Twice."
Mara said, "No, we did not see that as a face."
Bell said, "Bell was in maintenance, not witness."
Priya said, "I was last to enter for capture."
Auditor wrote those lines down.
Then she said, "Your biggest vulnerability is this room's interpretation. Without an identified human witness you have mechanism, not person."
Elise replied, "Mechanism was used to erase a person."
She stared for one second, then closed her notebook.
Outside, the air felt cooler than before.
At the stair landing, they split the visit notes: one copy to audit office, one to Helen, one kept in analog.
Bell said there was still one call in his queue from a blocked line:
If you close this room, the witness survives.
Priya said, "Who sent?"
Elise answered, "No one useful."
Back at studio, she read that message aloud with no sarcasm.
If the room is sealed, maybe we won the wrong thing.
Mara said, "What should we ask?"
Elise said, "If there was no June as person, then we should close the room and open chain by personhood rights."
Priya wrote that down as the working conclusion.
