Chapter 81
The Voice in the Staircase
After the quiet hearing, the hallway to Bell's office held a voice.
Not real-time, more like playback.
When Elise entered, she heard one line, not from the phone, not from a neighbor:
Don't trust the room where they kept your name as a draft.
Bell checked his lock on the door. Fresh scratch.
Mara said, "Someone knows where you store route copies."
Priya moved the backup packets to a hidden slot and told Bell to do the same.
The voice appeared again at 11:17 from an old staircase sensor.
This time they answered together:
"Who is this?"
No reply.
The staircase had one blackened mark at chest height.
Priya compared it under light and found old carbon transfer:
JUNE = transfer mode; not person status.
Elise asked, "Can a person become a transfer mode and still live?"
Bell said, "In systems, yes."
Mara said, "In life, no."
Helen called at dusk and asked for "final witness bundle" before sunrise.
Elise prepared one final short statement:
The hearing queue split should not be used to erase an individual witness status.
Bell brought a metal case and said it held one last clean copy from the annex.
At 2:40 a.m., Priya got a call from the neutral tech who had verified the hash once.
"You have one anomaly not yet filed," he said.
She asked, "Which one?"
Channel reset between 11:17 and public notice, unlogged.
Mara looked at Elise. "Then someone delayed the room until now."
Elise nodded once, not angry, just certain.
They decided to file one sealed addendum the next morning and send it only to the panel and Helen.
The unknown voice never sent again.
Maybe that was the first sign it had served its purpose.
