The Door That Kept Counting

At the hearing center entrance, Bell watched the electronic door count visitors by second.

"This one counts even when doors stay closed," he said.

Elise laughed once and then wrote the line in her notebook.

In hearing room B, they filed one final correction request and one personal statement.

Priya set the sequence chart on a clear folder:

Door count unchanged at first hearing, changed during second queue hold, changed again at correction stage.

Mara spoke about room seals.

One keycard, one unlabeled corridor, one missing face.

Elise added one line that surprised everyone:

I do not want to prove June exists as evidence. I want a legal category that protects people who cannot be named the way they should be.

The panel kept that one line and wrote no immediate comment.

After hearing, they returned to Bell's place and found the door counting sensor at home clicking every few seconds.

Priya said it was tied to the building maintenance line.

Bell unplugged it and looked at Elise.

"This is now active."

He plugged it back.

Count did not stop.

Mara said, "Let it count."

Elise asked why.

"If it keeps count, then it knows how many of us it can carry before failing." Bell answered.

Outside, a message appeared from an unknown source:

The door that keeps count is usually the room that wants a fifth witness.

Elise sat with her pen and wrote one small correction:

Fifth witness is not a person. It is the final legal check.

That night, they split all physical files by room name.

No copy carried only a full name.

No route was single.
