Chapter 87
The Silent Corridor
Silence in a corridor can be louder than a shout.
Elise stood at the stair to corridor 4 with Bell and Priya, watching the panel count signatures in the other room.
Mara came in late and said, "The legal office called. Supplemental review is open."
The three looked at each other, then at the corridor.
"We do final statement this way," Priya said, and took a paper notebook out of her jacket.
In the silent corridor, they walked and read line by line:
11:17 no-face witness.
route hold without personal identifier.
hidden corridor storage.
missing consent lock entry.
Mara said, "Keep the corridor clean. No one can alter in this room."
Elise nodded and pressed play on the old recorder.
The recording held one low signal and one phrase:
If you need me, call me when there is no witness.
Bell said, "Could be synthetic bleed."
Priya said, "Could be one source line from before we entered."
At the hearing window, they submitted the supplementary route notes.
No one signed with full name.
Instead they used initials and route marks.
That alone made the clerk look uneasy.
After submission, they sat on an empty stair landing and shared tea with no sugar.
Elise felt the relief hit hard.
Mara said, "We might have kept enough."
Priya replied, "Enough to keep them asking."
Bell said, "Asking is what we wanted."
At 8:55, another envelope arrived with a clean white card.
Silent corridors are not empty. They are temporary legal spaces.
Elise wrote it in her book.
By midnight, the city still sounded ordinary.
She realized that ordinary was the first good thing in weeks.
