The Hallway That Kept Calling
The hallway kept calling because the phone did not ring.
At 7:15, Elise stood at her front door and saw no message, only one repeating tone in the building wall.
Bell said the tone was old floor buzz from maintenance.
Mara said, "Or the room trying to finish what it started."
Priya brought the correction packet from legal and said they had three days before final decision.
"Three days to submit owner identification."
Elise said, "Owner of what?"
Priya: "The process owner who approved witness queue hold."
The hallway at the annex had six marks on the wall where notices once were.
At one mark she found one phrase hidden under tape:
Call the owner with the corridor stamp.
Bell checked one old map and said this stamp was used only in maintenance reviews.
Mara drove to the municipal works office and asked for public owner register.
The clerk said two names appeared, one retired, one unknown.
Elise asked, "Unknown from where?"
No one answered.
They returned with one folder containing contractor names and one with signature times.
Priya loaded one to audio and played around 11:17.
Unknown contractor approved at corridor lock hold.
The line was now in evidence.
In the evening, Elise called Helen.
We have process owner candidate, incomplete identity. she said.
Helen replied, Good. Incomplete can still force correction hearing.
The hallway kept its tone but stopped the call.
Elise wrote in her notes:
If owner is unknown, owner is system.
She added one final line:
Then the owner must be named by law.
